I learned about this through Arnold Schwarzenegger's reported tweet: "I read this story in @TexasMonthly today about @HEB and it is a masterclass in preparation and being ready to support your community." https://twitter.com/Schwarzenegger/status/1243235329378619394

This grocery store chain activated its emergency ops center on March 4th.Inside the Story of How H-E-B Planned for the Pandemic – Texas Monthly
I went to HEB last night, still not paper products, but almost everything else is at full capacity.
The things that were very limited in the first few days are back, Milk, Flour, Sugar, Eggs, cheese, ect.
There is now a plexyglass shield between the cashier and the customers.

The shield is such great news. Was the store crowded?

not really, and everyone was good about the social distancing, they also had tape on floor of how close to stand to the next person in line.

Wow. I wonder if other grocery stores are marking the safe (safer) distance. Thanks for telling me about this.

No problem, and yes they are marking the safe distance, they also have extra people outside wiping down all the baskets.
and seem to be wiping down the cash register lanes between customers.

I wonder what they're using to wipe stuff down. This is all reassuring.

It was in a spray bottle, but smelled like bleach mixed with something else.

I'm in awe with Kroger also. I don't know if they are part of HEB but they also have the tape on the flood plexiglass and paper products. I have no need for them but have been going out once a week for produce and perishables. Plenty of good fruits and veggies right now. Actually the only 2 areas of the store that seemed empty are the meat and cleaning supplies.

There is nothing quite like the smell of bleach to reassure!

Gosh, I hope H.E.B. customers are reading this. For Hispanic families a trip to the grocery store is a social experience with even the abuelita along for the trip. Please, please just one family member in the store!!!
So far people seem to be well behaved, families are going, but everyone is following the rules.
The senior only hours, seem to be working as well.

I've heard that Dollar General stores have designated their first open hour daily to seniors too. If the store has been sanitized overnight, this is probably a good deal.

I cannot speak to Dollar General, but Walmart, Kroger, Sams and Costco, all have senior hours, some like Walmart only one day a week (Tuesdays),
but it greatly reduces the customer count during that hour. (The regular Walmart crowd, does not seem as aware of social distancing, as they should be.)
