Legendary singer-songwriter John Prine, a part-time Gulfport resident, is hospitalized in “critical” condition after suddenly developing symptoms consistent with the coronavirus. The news, posted to his social media Sunday evening, said he’s been intubated and has been receiving care since Thursday. “His situation is critical,” Prine’s family stated. “This is hard news for us to share. But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you.” Earlier this month, Prine’s wife Fiona announced she had tested positive for COVID-19 and had isolated herself from her husband, who has a history of health issues. Discovered by Kris Kristofferson in the early 1970s, Prine was often compared to Bob Dylan for his evocative lyrics and storytelling. Several of his songs became hits for other artists, including Angel From Montgomery (Bonnie Raitt) and You Never Even Called Me By My Name (David Allan Coe).

Wishing John a speedy and total recovery.

He’s supposed to be ageless.......

Count me as another John Prine fan saying a daily prayer for him and his loved ones! His music came onto my personal radar about 1973. I didn't know he kept a home in Pinellas County, FL.

John lives part time in Gulf Port, a coastal town a few miles south, southwest of downtown St. Petersburg. I live in Belleair Bluffs about 15 to 20 miles north of Gulf Port.

So it seems his age, 73, and past health issues factor heavily into his current battle to survive.

One of my favorite John Prine tunes:

One of the great songwriters.

Angel From Montgomery being my favorite. I like Susan Tedeschi's version best.

Right on!

I am an old woman named after my mother
My old man is another child that's grown old
If dreams were lightning thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man
But that was a long time and no matter how I try
The years just flow by like a broken down dam.
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today.
How the hell can a person go to work in the morning
And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go

I really hope he makes it through. Earlier in the week we lost Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) due to COVID-19, which was sad to hear because I was a fan of FoW.

John Prine, the raspy-voiced singer-songwriter whose homespun, witty and insightful country-folk tunes influenced legions of musicians in a career that spanned five decades, died Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He was 73. His publicist tells CNN, "Yes, we can confirm on behalf of the Prine family — John died today at Vanderbilt due to complications of Covid-19." Prine was hospitalized and intubated last month after a "sudden onset" of coronavirus symptoms, according to a family statement posted on his verified Twitter account. "This is hard news for us to share. But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you," the statement said.

He fought tough. RIP JP
