The flu remains a higher threat to U.S. public health than the new coronavirus.

This flu season alone has sickened at least 19 million across the U.S. and led to 10,000 deaths and 180,000 hospitalizations.

Roughly a dozen cases of the deadly coronavirus have been identified in the U.S., though the number has mushroomed across its outbreak zone in China.

While the new coronavirus ravages much of China and world leaders rush to close their borders to protect citizens from the outbreak, the flu has quietly killed 10,000 in the U.S. so far this influenza season.

At least 19 million people have come down with the flu in the U.S. with 180,000 ending up in the hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The flu season, which started in September and can run until May, is currently at its peak and poses a greater health threat to the U.S. than the new coronavirus, physicians say. The new virus, which first emerged in Wuhan, China, on Dec. 31, has sickened roughly 17,400 and killed 362 people mostly in that country as of Monday morning.

“In the U.S., it’s really a fear based on media and this being something new,” Dr. Jennifer Lighter, hospital epidemiologist at NYU Langone Health, said of the new coronavirus.

“When in reality, people can take measures to protect themselves against the flu, which is here and prevalent and has already killed 10,000 people.”

The coronavirus outbreak, however, is proving to be more deadly than the flu.

It has killed roughly 2% of the people who have contracted it so far, according to world health officials.

That compares with a mortality rate of 0.095% for the flu in the U.S., according to CDC estimates for the 2019-2020 flu season. The CDC estimates that 21 million people will eventually get the flu this season.

Once the human body defeats this virus the human body has then created an immunity to this strain thus a vaccine would not necessarily have an impact. A vaccine is no guarantee. This is not new thinking.

As I understand most of those dying had a compromised immune situation and possibly died from pneumonia RATHER than the corona virus.

One other very large complication is the lack of testing capability.

With so much of USA products being manufactured in China should be a concern. At least mandate all USA medical supplies be manufactured in the USA.

Malaria is a serious disease that causes high fever, chills, and flu-like symptoms that can be life-threatening if not treated quickly.

Clinical trials are underway, but there is so far little firm evidence that hydroxychloroquine, also known by its brand name Plaquenil, is effective in treating coronavirus: One study in France found that patients who took the drug along with an antibiotic cleared the virus from their bodies more quickly.

A study that tested the drug in a randomized controlled trial in China did not find a difference in recovery rates, but like the French study, it involved only a small group of patients.

Even if the drug were definitely effective, though, scientists have known for decades that the drug carries adverse psychiatric side effects and can also cause deadly heart complications.

Only clinical trials can clarify who would benefit and who would be at too big a risk.

Prescribing the drug now is “kind of a ‘last resort’ measure for those with severe disease,” Joshua Michaud, associate director for global health policy at the Kaiser Family Foundation, told Vox, later adding: “I would be more concerned about having large numbers people, including those without symptoms or only mild symptoms, taking this drug because of the risk of negative side effects and unclear benefits at this point.”

BuzzFeed reported that Kaiser Permanente, a major health care network, informed patients that it would stop filling their hydroxychloroquine prescriptions in order to maintain a supply for the “critically ill with COVID-19,” thanking them for their “sacrifice.”

The pills are on back order.

Some states are working to prevent this. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak blocked the use of anti-malaria drugs for coronavirus patients to protect against stockpiling.

Now, Nevadans can only obtain prescriptions for a 30-day supply to ensure it’s available for “legitimate medical purposes,” such as treating lupus and arthritis.

The run on hydroxychloroquine stems from fear: Americans are facing a frightening pandemic and looking for hope. Trump is talking up an as-yet-unproven drug to try to give it to them.

But the consequences of his rhetoric and the accompanying hype for hydroxychloroquine are being felt by people with autoimmune conditions like lupus, who will be even more vulnerable to complications from Covid-19 if they can’t get the medication.

“For those with grave autoimmune diseases,” Francisco wrote, “not having access to this medication might be fatal.”
