CNN, MSNBC Bosses Ignore Staff Pleas to Cut Trump Coronavirus Pressers

Trump’s daily pandemic briefings have devolved into an “open-mic night” full of “misinformation,” cable staffers said.

The nation’s television news outlets, especially the three major cable-news networks, are grappling with a nagging paradox as President Donald Trump continues to orchestrate his White House briefings on the novel coronavirus pandemic. On the one hand, their ratings have never been higher, and viewers’ appetites for the live sessions have shown no signs of dwindling. On the other hand, journalists and executives at MSNBC, CNN, and the often Trump-friendly Fox News—which scored an impressive 6.2 million viewers for Sunday’s installment of the Trump show, according to Nielsen—are increasingly facing the likelihood that they are becoming an uncritical and unvetted transmission belt for propaganda and misinformation. Despite internal hand-wringing among producers and journalists as the week unfolded, however, the bosses at MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News once again decided on Thursday to broadcast every moment of Trump’s self-congratulatory and largely fact-free cheer-leading live as the United States achieved the dubious milestone of becoming the world’s No. 1 coronavirus-infected country—surpassing even China’s 81,000-plus cases by more than 2,000, with twice China’s death rate.

“These White House sessions—ostensibly meant to give the public critical and truthful information about this frightening crisis—are in fact working against that end,” wrote Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan, summarizing such concerns. “Rather, they have become a daily stage for Trump to play his greatest hits to captive audience members. They come in search of life-or-death information, but here’s what they get from him instead: Self-aggrandizement… Media-bashing… Exaggeration and outright lies.” Going forward, they said, they will be ready to cut away from the briefings when newsworthy facts and figures—usually shared by federal public-health officials such as Dr. Anthony Fauci—give way to unsupported presidential speculation and outright falsehoods. “We might take it from the top and then cut away after the first lie, and return when the lies stop,” said one cable-network producer. “They’re so full of misinformation. Someone has already died from it,” a different MSNBC insider said, citing the story of an Arizona man who ingested fish-tank solvent, chloroquine with phosphate, after hearing Trump tout that key ingredient in its prescription-drug form at one of his press conferences.

The Trump segments of the White House pressers are worse than useless. Nothing more than political propaganda fart fests.

I’m not as upset about this as some people seem to be.

The briefings are neither brief, nor particularly useful.

In truth, MSNBC and (I think, CNN) already break from them. Only Fox lets Trump drone on.

Trump is up there attacking governors, and still trying to fob this off as the flu.

Sadly, the knuckle draggers are singing in chorus.

The point is that airing trump's pressers is partaking in the spread of disinformation, confusion, chaos and division. While news is traditionally concerned with reporting events instead of acting according to some notion of the public welfare, I don't agree that this tradition is necessarily a suicide pact. A nationwide health disaster like an out-of-control pandemic seems to me to be a good example of an occasion to pull that plug.

I've watched the past week's worth of daily briefings, even if I have to flip channels to see it start to end.

It is understandable that the networks are caught between ratings for covering these train wrecks of incoherent nonsense from Trump against the practical risks of so many hearing falsehoods and misinformation leading to even more panic and general masses stupidity.

It speaks volumes that this is where we are as a nation, and speaks even more at how inept our President is.

Shockingly the only one that moderately speaks well at those briefings is Pence, even if there is some misleading statements coming from him as well.

Very true, but to watch your leader during a time of crisis put on a **** show for his own benefit and not ours is upsetting.

I don't care who airs what. I say let Trump go out there an make an ass of himself every day. Works for me.

Speaking of the flu, here's a February 26th editorial from the NEJM by Dr. Fauchi - https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387

On the basis of a case definition requiring a diagnosis of pneumonia, the currently reported case fatality rate is approximately 2%.4 In another article in the Journal, Guan et al.5 report mortality of 1.4% among 1099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19; these patients had a wide spectrum of disease severity. If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. This suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.2

Also, people have been slamming Trump for mentioning Chloroquine but it turns out that it WAS being used in trials and was showing some success.

A robust research effort is currently under way to develop a vaccine against Covid-19.10 We anticipate that the first candidates will enter phase 1 trials by early spring. Therapy currently consists of supportive care while a variety of investigational approaches are being explored.11 Among these are the antiviral medication lopinavir–ritonavir, interferon-1β, the RNA polymerase inhibitor remdesivir, chloroquine, and a variety of traditional Chinese medicine products.11 Once available, intravenous hyperimmune globulin from recovered persons and monoclonal antibodies may be attractive candidates to study in early intervention. Critical to moving the field forward, even in the context of an outbreak, is ensuring that investigational products are evaluated in scientifically and ethically sound studies.12

I know that everyone likes to suggest that Trump is talking out his ass and only spouting whatever Hannity tells him to say but it sure looks like he may have been paying attention to EVERYONE instead of just the fear mongers.

I disagree. He's doing real damage to the country during the worst health crisis since 1918. At this point, everybody, states and individuals alike, need to deal with it as if the Executive Branch didn't exist because, for all useful purposes, it doesn't.

I get a kick out of the way all you folks want a unified plan and mobilization organized and implemented by a federal central authority....just not the one in place now.

Well, with all due respect, that's ALWAYS the problem with "one size fits all" solutions.

Yes, we want a central leadership that's professional and concerned with the public good than a central leadership that isn't. If that leadership is concerned exclusively with sowing chaos and division, it's best that that leadership is ignored as much as is possible.

I can't imagine Trump Pressers being nothing more than invented drama and partisan propaganda. Color me shocked.

Theyre a bunch of authoritarians, just as long as its one of their kind who's in charge....

One really has to ask what it is that is truly upsetting the idiot leftists that are trying to get the networks to pull the plug...the content, or the fact that Trumps approval ratings for handling this have increased dramatically. Literally, the same people ****ting themselves over his response are the same people that **** themselves over every trivial thing that has happened in the last 4 years, including lying and fabricating things to **** themselves over.

The worst thing that can happen is we get the government we think we have. Republicans have always believed that governing is bad, and they have been very clear that they intend to prove it at every available opportunity.

I mean, they haven't been coy about it. It's their platform.

What should be upsetting to all Americans is our ****stain of a President cannot be trusted to go on national TV and not lie his ****ing ass off spreading bull**** that makes his ****ty performance throughout this **** appear competent. Instead the morons and lemmings lap that **** up like gravy, and it's dangerous that the rest of us who aren't ****ing idiots have to effectively assume everything the President says is a bunch of **** and disregard it all until someone not a ****ing liar verifies his bull****.

Think what you like of the man, and his self serving motives (and I have a low opinion of both), he is still the President of the United States.

He is still up there attacking governors, reporters, whining about how he was maligned, making it very clear that he cares about the Dow Jones, but not the casualty count, and standing around pouting and looking like a lost boy who wandered into the room.

I don’t think Easter Sunday is going to be a good day for any of us. But it certainly isn’t going to be for Donald Trump.

Time wounds all heels. Especially when you point the camera at one.

Yes, he’s very clearly using electronic media to steal free airtime for him to electioneer. That’s obvious.

He also sent a taxpayer funded campaign piece around too. (It’s sitting on top of this morning’s mail).

True, the Trump true believers will suck this up like catnip.

But I do think most people will see Trump’s self serving behavior, his weakness, and his utter failure to actually lead.

Wanna talk political propaganda? How about spreading the narrative that Trump killed a guy? The one guy and his wife out of 330 million people who ingested the ingredients of fish tank cleaner and wasn't even sick.

He's gotta be burning through his independent "cushion".

He's got a shovel taped to each hand.

Let him dig.

Here's an idea, if you rather hear the interpretation instead of the actual briefing, change the channel. It is not that complicated.

What I'd rather hear is someone who knows what the **** he's talking about rather than some dumb**** who has only himself in mind.
