WHO Issues a Rare Public Scolding- Countries Wasting Time

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Governments should stop wasting precious time needed to fight the coronavirus after squandering an opportunity to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization’s head said.

“We squandered the first window of opportunity,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “The time to act was actually more than a month ago or two months ago.”
People should prepare for a long shutdown, in many areas, more than are presently locked down

And yes Trump was warned by Azzar around 18 Jan, and Intel Agencies briefing also stated the problem

Trump needs to get the Fed Govt more involved in expanding production of PPE needed.

Why Trump does not see this / disregarded Intel- Azzars briefing -is ffn stunningly stupid

    OK, serious question here.

Suppose the powers that be -- Trump, whoever -- knew with certainty on January 18 that it all was coming and could even see how many cases would be involved, etc., etc. Perfect clarity.

What then? A lockdown? Shelters in place? How would you sell that to a populace that hadn't even seen a single confirmed case? And I don't mean just the US -- how would Europe have done it? How would Canada have done it? How would any free society have done it?

Could they have possibly started ramping up gathering and producing medical goods? Sure. Would that have stopped the spread? No. The spread being stunted would have required shutdowns, lockdowns, everything.

Do you think that would have been even slightly feasible?

If that's not what you have in mind, then what? 'Coz just about every country was caught with its pants down. So what should they all have done, in January?
"They don't believe in our institutions!" the Democrats wail, as they go on and on about how the Senate and Electoral College need to be abolished, the Supreme Court altered, and that the upcoming election result can't be trusted if it doesn't go their way.

While it is Monday Morning Quarterbacking at its finest, yes, Donald Trump should have consulted with experts and at the very least asked Congress for funding to replenish the Federal government's stockpile of emergency medical supplies and equipment and started doing it two months ago.
It’s in the small things that the rot starts. Do the wrong thing once, it’s easier to do it again. Do the individualistic thing once, it is easy to do it again.

Then again, two months ago WHO was reporting that there was no evidence of human to human transmission.

Another Oh but orange man bad should have done thread, another day.

Meanwhile, while the usual suspects and Trump critics whine he could have, would have, and should have, the facts show a different story altogether. He has done a lot!
List: 74 actions taken by Trump to fight virus and bolster economy

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” said the former vice president. “All men and women created by the you know, you know the thing.”

I agree with that. But again -- it wouldn't have stopped the spread.

It also isn't as quite easy as that. Even now, in the midst of it, when the danger is present, bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles are (stupidly) getting in the way.

The FDA putting a stop to in-home coronavirus test kits:

FDA Tells At-Home Diagnostics Companies To Stop Coronavirus Test Roll-Outs – Reason.com

The feds says it could take up to 90 days to approve new production of N95 masks:

U.S. Needs Billions of New Masks to Combat Coronavirus. Feds Say It’ll Take Up To 90 Days to Approve New Mask-Making Facilities. – Reason.com

Those are based on rules which long predate the current administration.

So yes, getting the ball rolling on that two months ago would put us closer now, no question, none at all.

But lockdowns, shutdowns, social distancing measures which could have dented the spread? That was never, ever a realistic possibility, for any free country.

You need to check the calendar. Your apologism is out dated.
