Louisiana pastor defies coronavirus order, draws over 1,000 people to services

"The virus, we believe, is politically motivated," Tony Spell said. "We hold our religious rights dear and we are going to assemble no matter what someone says."

Spell said 1,170 attended his service Sunday, according to WAFB.

"We have 27 buses on Sundays picking up people in a five-parish area," he said.

Spell also told the outlet that police showed up at the church after the service Tuesday night and informed him the National Guard would break up any future gatherings that exceed 50 people.

You cannot fix stupid. But, maybe the National Guard can at least stop it from spreading.

But a National Guard spokesman in Baton Rouge told NBC News on Wednesday it is not involved in the matter and has no role in enforcing social distancing requirements as set by Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Good for him. I’m glad someone is still willing to risk everything for their liberty.

I think the Governor should have the national guard forcibly arresting peaceable worshippers, because the footage of THAT act of naked oppression would mobilize far more mass defiance to orders. The guard breaks them up then have a militia group armed at the next one.

What then? We already know the government will back down because of the Bundy standoff

If this is the precedent there will be no limit to oppression based off of “emergency orders”

The Alex Jones conspiracy nuts turned out to be saner then I thought. We’re seeing full breakdown of civil rights, and while I agree with the ability to restrict gatherings in principle during times like this, I think the left side of politics really sees this as an excuse to do what they’ve always wanted. They have literally said nothing to reassure anyone this is temporary. The Dems in fact are throwing out the idea of states of emergency until Autumn

Not to any ratioanl, sober adult they didn't. Jones is a loon. People who believe him are suckers and easy marks. We are not seeing a fullscale breakdown of civil rights, but we ARE seeing the far right pushing for that.

Good idea, because selfish people who risk infecting each other are going out into the world infection others. They did violate the Govs order.
