Glenn Reynolds: Thank your grocery store clerk

Yes. Our Fed Ex guy was near tears when thanked and wished well today, and we learned that he's been experiencing a lot of verbal abuse. My pharm tech said the same. I was just astonished--why would you holler at a poor pharm tech?

I would say I was suprised but honestly i have lived too long and understand all to well the depravity in men's hearts.

I've seen new stories about grocery stores installing plexiglass barriers between clerks and shoppers and have been told by a family member that in other communities, this is standard practice. Is it? If not, it should be. But how do clerks protect themselves from everything they handle and bag?

Anyway, Reynolds is right: Grocery store clerks are on the front line too. 5 tips for keeping your cool during the coronavirus crisis

I always thank the clerk and bagger. Heroes.

Some. Only some.

That's the thing--most of us have just never thought of this before now. The playbook is being written and revised by the day!

911 changed the world, C19 will as well and the changes will be massive

I am too. And for everybody shopping as well because every can or package touched has been handled by others. With an incubation period of up to 14 days, people who don't know they're sick yet are out and about. I took the doggies driving just to scope out what in-town looks like, and both my fave grocery stores were hopping. People just pouring out the exits as I drove through. Hordes. With kids.

I saw a study that the virus lasts 1-2 days on cardboard and 2-3 days on metal. I saw a similar thing today, it wasn't crowded but there were people. Food options are getting limited - little or none from local grocery delivery, instacart, Prime now, costco, schawn's - leaving mostly fast food drive-thru or restaurant pick-up.

Almost 4 weeks ago now I purchased two cans Microban spray at Walmart. (It's no longer available there, and it's not just "currently unavailable"; the product doesn't even pull up on a search.) It's been used to bomb vehicles twice, and we're spraying cardboard boxes the second they're delivered and leaving them outside for at least 24 hours. The virus can live up to five days on the soles of shoes, so we're leaving those shoes that have been out into the world on the porch as recommended.

A classic case of panic if I ever saw one. Considering COVID-19 is not nearly as virulent or as deadly as the influenza virus during the 2019 flu season last year, don't you think you are taking things way over board? Did you take these same precautions last year when 48,400 US citizens died as a result of the flu? Then why are you taking them now? I would be willing to wager that you are getting your misinformation from the leftist mainstream media. It would certainly explain your irrational panic.

You'd lose your bet. And you're barking up the wrong tree. I have a compromised immune system, and everything that "everybody else" is now doing I've been doing since November of 2005 when I left the hospital, having survived necrotizing fasciitis. I had a PIC line in for two months after that--two months of Vancomycin by IV and carried my antibiotic ball on its tether everywhere I went. What you don't know is that this infection never leaves the body. It hovers and lurks, just waiting for its next opportunity (such as a surgical or invasive dental procedure), and I've had one terrifying close call.

But thanks for the ignorant lecture anyway.

Funny how you didn't seem so concerned last year when two influenza virus strains were killing more than 1,500 US citizens per week in 2019. Suddenly, with a grand total of 1,246 US deaths since January 21, 2020, COVID-19 has suddenly becomes a HUGE concern. Why is that? It couldn't possibly be because you are really a Democrat seeking to incite as much panic as possible during an election year, could it?

Another thing to keep in mind. When you do go to any place of business, keep your distance from those working. They are on the front lines and they do not need to come in close contact with everyone who uses that place of business in a given day. Keep yourself safe, but keep others safe too.

You got me. I'm a Democrat. :lamo

How does the new coronavirus compare with the flu? | Live Science

Oh, yes. Wouldn't that be great? I haven't touched an elevator button since 2005 and have been the queen of antibacterial wipes since then. I have learned to be scrupulous because my life depends on it. So far, so good.

What scares me most is using public bathroom stalls. Those wonderful latches for privacy, how is anyone supposed to wash their hands before and after using them?

First of all...how do you now what she was and was not concerned with? Weird.

And Nota Bene a Democrat? That is funny. I mean seriously. Do you tire of being wrong?

In terms of comparing one with the other.....what makes Covied 19 stand out is NOT that it is more deadly than flu....it is more infectious.

But most certainly it can be deadly.

I was just gonna say that...my daughter is a dispatch for a trucking company...she has to work to keep the truckers moving...she says they are having a hard time because of drive-thrus and no place to stop and clean up...her suggestion, if you see a trucker stopped at a food place, ask him if you can go thru the drive thru for him...

What an excellent idea!

On a similar note, because the US is almost entirely devoid of public rest rooms, people on the road have to depend on convenience stores and fast food joints.

Frankly, convenience stores are NOT safe these days.

Then I suggest you march yourself down to your local hospital and volunteer, since there is nothing to worry about.

Bring any PPE, face masks, or hand cleaner you may have to donate.

You won’t need it. You’re invincible.

Exactly. We are protecting ourselves from our fellow shoppers who may transmit through the clerks.

I swear when I walk into the produce aisle full of my fellow shoppers as they select and handle the produce, I literally cringe. We are trying to only go out every two weeks, and my next outing will definitely be to the local supermarket that hands out surgical gloves at the entrance, and mandates you use them! I love it! I just hope the don't run out of gloves ...

You are lucky. I went grocery shopping yesterday and the cashier and bagger did not have on gloves. I asked why and she said they cannot get them anywhere. They are also out of hand sanitizer. Those poor people on the front lines like that with no protection. And then handling money all day long, taking it in and giving it out to people as change.

I always think about how dirty money is, and I've thought about this way before the pandemic. Money goes from one hand to another all day, everywhere. You cannot imagine where that money has been. Sometimes you get crumpled bills damp from sweat as change and that really creeps me out. I get rid of those sweaty crumpled bills as soon as I can. We don't wash our hands every time we handle money which makes it even dirtier.

I think handling money is the thing that gets people sick.

Ugh. Little packet of antibacterial wipes in pocket? Wash only afterward and then use paper towel to grab door knob? (I learned early on to also grab the paper towel for drying before beginning the hand-washing so that I could also turn off the faucet with it.)

Are you nuts? Influenza and pneumonia combined are the eighth leading cause of death in the US, but hospitals are the third leading cause of death in the US. 250,000 people in the US die every year from medical errors. You only show up at a hospital if you expect to die. Hospitals are the last place you want to be if you want to live.

Medical errors third-leading cause of death in America

Of course you would, anything to disrupt an election that you know you are going to lose anyway. Leftists are sooooooo predictable. It is in your best interest to incite as much panic as possible.

Then I take it you won't be voting for the guy who declared this a National Emergency to add to the panic?

Of course not. I never vote for leftist freaks, regardless of their party affiliation. There is no lower form of life.

With all due respect, why are you even going inside a grocery store, at this point?

You were saying that the flu is no big deal.

Funny , coming from someone in Alaska which has always been one of the top ten states to receive the most federal handout per capita.

Bingo. Money handling historically was one of the major things spreading infections, at least back when we all used it regularly. I had a family member that worked in retail banking, and the dangers of handling cash were well known. That's why tellers back in the day got generous paid sick day holidays.

I won't even consider using cash during this current crisis, at least in terms of having to receive change back. And I suspect those debit-card/credit-card readers are just as hazardous as cash.

I'm in a pretty hotly infected area, and only go out every 10-14 days (for provisions). I wear a mask & gloves, and only take the card I'm using. After using the card at the register, I immediately drop it into a sealed sandwich-baggie I bring with, and then wipe it down with alcohol in the garage when I get home. I then let it sit until my next foray out.

I'm also letting my mail & Amazon deliveries sit in the garage for 3 or 4 days, before bringing them in the house.

I'm trying not to be anal, but this thing is blowing-up all around me and I'm trying to take reasonable precautions that allow me to sleep at night.
