The Theory:

Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was one of the serial public personae of an immortal (human, or possibly alien). He faked his death in 1910.

One often noted peculiarity regarding Mr Clemens life is its association with Halley's Comet:
Twain was born two weeks after Halley's Comet's closest approach in 1835; he said in 1909:[SUP][72][/SUP]
I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: "Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together".
Twain's prediction was accurate; he died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910 in Redding, Connecticut, one day after the comet's closest approach to Earth.

Some believe he continued living under other names.

One theory says his next public personae was Robert Anson Heinlein, also a noted writer and known as one of the founding authors of modern science fiction. Heinlein often referenced Mark Twain and some find his writing style to be similar; Heinlein also wrote stories about immortal or long-lived humans.

Those who believe this also tend to believe that Heinlein, allegedly born in 1907, faked his death in 1988 and continues to live under another name.

The question is, who is he now? :)

Well, if Twain were Heinlein, he would have written Stranger In a Strange Land at the age of 126!

An age Lazarus Long would regard as a mere youngster. :)

Hawthorne Abendsen. In an alternate timeline. :)

Well, he wrote the point-of-view character, Jubal Harshaw :)cool:), widely considered to be his own avatar, as a very youthful 90-something, so . . .

I can't come up with a current modern writer who strikes me as a good candidate for being Mark Twain and Robert Heinlein's new personae. :)

Anybody?

Lizard man or Space Vamp?

Can't think of one off hand.

Has to be about the human condition and relationships wrapped in riveting stories. Stories that make one question ones preconceptions.

Maybe Vonnegut? Not sure about the last 10 years, though.

I love these sorts of things. They are verbal Rorschach tests.

...personally, I prefer being the person in the chair posing the question as opposed to being the one volunteering an answer.

Good question - kudos. :applaud

Twain and Heinlein are certainly two of my favorite authors. I had not heard of this possible connection before, so thanks much for the information, even if it is only speculation. :)

Something I heard some people talking about at a convention years ago.

Oddly enough, the fellow who was doing most of the talking was such a dead ringer for Richard Boone (actor - Paladin/have gun will travel) in both appearance, height, build, voice and manner, that it was uncanny. That was actually what first drew my attention.

Richard Boone had been dead for decades at the time though.

Or had he? :)

Paladin, Paladin
Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin,
Far, far from home.

Maybe RBoone just came home.

Have gun will travel was one of my favorite shows.

Steve Alten has written some interesting SF. His new book "UNdisclosed" is an interesting take on UFO's, shadow world governments, etc. Worth a read.
or maybe Twain wrote it.

Anybody?

Margaret Atwood. Or somebody Irish.
