Recently in the news is the Wisconsin company that is purported to make/improve vending machines software has offered their employees a free upgrade. The company will pay for the implanting of a chip, much as people who have pets do to keep track of the animal. Are these chips two way? As in adding/deleting information contained on them. The other question has to do with the need for a vending machine software company has the need for this sort of security. The chips will replace employee cards to gain access to certain secure areas of the company. Vending machine software translate to something to do with national security?

I’ve not looked in to the details but I doubt it. It’s probably nothing more than an identifier and software in the machines (or whatever else reads it) links that identity to an account or security role. In this case it’s a replacement for a credit/debit card, which basically just has an account number on it and a reader sends that number to your bank to get the actual details it needs.

This isn’t necessarily about security, just about identity. Obviously accurately identifying someone is a key element of security but ultimately this could be linked to anything where you currently use some other means of telling an electronic system or other human being who you are.

At one point, the Mob owned many of the vending machine businesses in order to help launder ill-gotten monies. Something to ponder.
