Guilty.

A good story but old news. Many have written about this, over many years. Bill Clinton's behind the scenes involvement at Mena, Arkansas means he has been tight with the CIA for decades. Oliver North was in on it. Cocaine Importing Agency is an appropriate title.

On the same day the Monica Lewinsky story broke, the CIA formally admitted that what Gary Webb had discovered in his investigation was true.

Yet many americans are in denial about this. When everything the American people believe is false, we will know that our misinformation efforts have succeeded.

Yep...definitely old news. But, solid nonetheless.

This. Conspiracies and conspiracy theories.

All proven conspiracies were once a conspiracy theory. Odd thing is that the anti-CT crowd wants to dismiss the theories while accepting the conspiracies. I never quite understood their twisted logic on that.

You can’t understand the logic of accepting the claims that have been proven but not accepting the claims that haven’t? The status of other conspiracy theories are irrelevant; any individual claim needs to stand up on its own merits.

It’s also worth noting that a lot of conspiracy theories which are found to have some basis in truth are still surrounded by lots of misinformation, exaggeration and untruths, especially when multiple theories start getting combined or built upon each other. After all, there are plenty of conspiracy theories where different promoters push contradictory claims (like some 9/11 theorists saying the planes were remote controlled while others say there were no planes at all).

Good points.

Considering there were supposedly 4 different airplanes involved in 911, there is a little bit of truth in each of your statements. In 2 places where there were supposed to be airplanes, Shanksville and the Pentagon, there were no CRASHED planes. Perhaps (likely) a fly-by in each of those locations, but no crashed airliner at either place.

At WTC there were airplanes, but neither was what it was supposed to be. And of course many point out that there are highly irregular details regarding the photos, and I'm neutral on that. I don't know enough about pixels and such to hold an informed opinion, but I suspect those people are right--peculiar problems with the photos. But problems with the photos does not necessarily mean there were no aircraft there.

I would not disagree with this assertion. Just because some conspiracies, which at one time were just theories, turned out to be mostly correct does not mean all conspiracy theories are worthy of consideration. But, just because a CT was off on a few details when a conspiracy is finally revealed does not make the CT garbage either. And, that is where I take issue with the anti-CT crowd. They are in their denial no less nutty than the CTers are in their beliefs.

I object to all these entirely separate beliefs, accusations and ideas being lumped together at all. Some conspiracy theories (as presented by some proponents at least) are garbage because they’re garbage – based of false information (knowingly or not), flawed logic and partisan bias. Some of their opponents fall in to the same basket of course and it all gets dragged in to the mire.

Some conspiracy theories have a more rational basis (though some people still take them too far) but they’re unproven by definition. The problem I commonly see in those cases is proponents asserting that their beliefs should be treated differently to anyone else’s, accepted as fact and acted on despite their inability to prove (or often even support at all) the beliefs. Half the time they’re not even willing to establish a clear and definitive hypothesis for their claims but just continue to make scattered accusations apparently at random.

Many of the incidents listed earlier in this thread were never really “conspiracy theories” as we’re talking about them here. They were conspiracies that were ultimately proven but they didn’t necessarily go through a phase of random people throwing out specific accusations without any supporting evidence. They were instead uncovered though a valid process of investigation and only raised with the public and/or relevant authorities where the evidence was in place.

There are more than "One Proven Conspiracy Theory" in the USA:

10 Nefarious Conspiracies Proven True - Listverse

Not every conspiracy person is crazy, as they try to claim them to be all "Tin Hat nuts", yet not all of them are right either.
It's all about debating using facts, and when you pose ideas or theories be sure to mention that they are unproven. It gives more creditability to the conspiracy community.
