So, been lurking in the shadows for a while, just getting the feel for the place. Naturally, like in real life, there is a huge split in ideals, with the moderate mainstream almost non existent. From reading comments and post, I can see that most people are firmly encamped into their side, you can pretty much know where anyone sits on any issue just by knowing one issue, that's insane but it is what it is. I remember a time when being a gun nut had nothing to do with being pro-life, or when wanting lower/higher taxes had nothing to do with being a "Nazi" or communist, lol.
I'm Canadian, born and raised in Slovenia, so I'll bring an outside perspective to you Americans, i assume most of you are Americans. I love the US, consider the constitution one of the greatest works of literature ever produced by humans, let alone political document which is obvious, no other comes close. I'm a student of history and politics, although my graduate studies were in astrophysics and chemistry.
I suppose I could call myself a classical liberal, I've called myself liberal in the past, mostly libertarian on issues but definitely not a big L libertarian, conservative on other issues but definitely not a big C conservative or R republican, although I have opinions on many topics that are more on par with the left or right, depending on the issue.
20 years ago I would have cringed at the thought of conservatism, mostly due to religion, but these days the attacks on science seem to be coming from the far left, and the moderate mainstream left is too scared to call them out on it. The far left is probably more religious than the far right at this point, their dogma rules supreme and cannot be questioned at the risk of excommunication.
If "right wing" means anyone not an absolute agreement with the new left, then that is what I am I guess, although this remains to be seen as we debate.
