The dog stole and drank my last beer while I was napping. Now he's napping. I shake his lead, yell "out" at him so we can take a walk for more beer, he won't budge. He just snorts, rolls his eyes and goes back to sleep. He got his and doesn't care about anyone else. I even tried playing my guitar and singing, but he didn't move, just released methane. At least one of the neighbors slipped an envelop under the door with a sawbuck and a note begging me to stop singing. He's the laziest Wolfhound Dane mix in the neighborhood. He's also the only Wolfhound Dane mix in the neighborhood.

I'm a retired businessman, with 4 adult kids, and at last count 16 grandkids or so. I'm not sure of the accuracy, or who's who, because the grandkids keep visiting with their cousins and friends and I'm not sure of who they really are or which ones are mine. It's not that they speak with me, they just enjoy checking out the music collection.

I grew up at the same general time period in the same general neighborhood as Donald Trump and the Weinstein brothers, and I am not responsible for either. I can testify that none of the three were invited to many neighborhood parties. Tho Donald was a good baseball player, and the brothers were in love with movies and not much else.

I'm not a Democrat, Republican or Libertarian, not liberal or conservative, just a plain old pragmatist, capitalist, proud of being American, whatever that means. I served in SE Asia after college, then did a stint with NYPD, earning a gold shield. Retiring after 15 years taking one in the right leg, matching the gift in the left leg from SE Asia (friendly fire). Went on to a career operating a personal security company that my former partner now owns and is expanding. I still retain a small piece, and gave her the rest of the company when I called it a day. My first wife, mother of my children, passed 12 years ago from leukemia, and I remarried 18 months ago to my daughter in law's mother who I've lived with for the previous 4 years. It was a case of mutual hate at first sight that somehow twisted into a loving relationship because of the grandkids. She's a high end textile designer based here in NYC, but well traveled in Europe and Asia where she also buys for her clients.

These days I spend my time walking the dog, playing my guitars, listening to music and reading classic and new novels. (new meaning authored during the last 50 years or so) I'm currently reading a relatively recent translation of Dumas' (pere) Count of Monte Cristo. Nothing like any of the movies. I also spend time raising funds for philanthropies and occasionally performing with my band, The Sagging Bottom Boys, not to be confused with the Soggy Bottom Boys of movie fame. We're all guys over 65 and that should explain the band name. Tho soggy bottom boys may be in the future.

I'm recently returned from a summer in Europe, playing small venues with a grandniece and grandnephew, who both are very talented. She's a violinist, he's a mandolin and guitar player. My wife accompanied us as chaperone, preventing me from getting us in too much trouble. They both sing, and I backed them up mostly with my old maple Guild NJ30 12 string. It was great fun, and the audiences were extremely receptive, often with members who joined with us to make good music. Now both are back in high school for the last year, before going on to college.

That's my story, and I hope you all enjoy my posts and consider them a quality addition to the community here.

That reminds me of this one time, down in Alabama during deer season...

Welcome to DP. :)

You, sir, sound like you're going to be a blast around here. Welcome!!

It's my distinct pleasure to meet you!

That was a great intro post!

Is any of it true? :2razz:

You do know that's animal abuse, right?

My oldest son had a Siberian Husky who would steal your beer every chance she got...she lived to be 17...:)

Welcome!:2wave:

Well now, that's an impressive open.

WELCOME

Welcome aboard OldFatGuy :peace

Thank you, all.

It's all true, except the dog didn't steal the beer. He just assumes that when I put down the glass and it goes flat, it is his. My fault for falling into a nap. I was listening to Moire Brennan (Enya's sister and the original vocalist for Clannad before Enya took her place, and who was replaced by another sister when she went on to her solo career), and she often lulls me to sleep. Such a sweet voice. There's something about the voices of these lovely Irish lasses.....

There's also something special about groups composed of family members.

Thank you for explaining about the beer. My Maja is ten and not quite as cheerful as she used to be. I feel like giving her a small of (weak, Swedish) beer now and then but my wife is strongly against it. Maybe because she - my wife not my dog - grew up in a temperance home.

You sound like someone too fun to bicker about politics, lol.

Best opener I've seen so far, can't wait to become your nemesis, as if I'm gonna have anyone abuse me in a debate forum, I want it to be someone as entertaining with the Englishing as you! ;)

Welcome to DP, OldFatMan, I like you already.

cheers-to-you-old-boy.jpg

Hopefully we won't be bickering, just laughing together.

My only real nemesis is the grandchildren, all of them.

From another Clannad fan, welcome. I've not listened to them in many years.

Nice opening post, by the way. Had me chuckling out loud a couple of times.

Welcome to the board.
