Why Jefferson wrote "separation of Church and State"

Marriage is more than a religious act. Theres legal aspects to marriage that apply whether you're religious or not. As such, the status needs to be available to everyone, religious or not.

Or has ever been. Marriage has always and everywhere been a civil matter. The religious connection comes from the fact that almost all countries historically had official religions, so the two were intertwined, but the primary purpose of marriage has always been establishing property rights, inheritance, and combined economic status.

The Christian Church made marriage a sacrament for the benefit of love, family, children, not for economic reasons.
