Was the First Amendment originally intended only to protect Christianity?

so such thing.

I assume you meant "no such thing"?

Christian deism, in the philosophy of religion, is a standpoint that branches from Christianity. It refers to a deist who believes in the moral teachings—but not divinity—of Jesus. Corbett and Corbett (1999) cite John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as exemplars

Christian deism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I am an agnostic atheist with a little dabbling of Christian Deism myself...

excuse me, why do you quote me, .....when i was talking about my actions on the forum......

then you post your link.???????

The answer is pretty simple... isn't it?

The answer is pretty simple... isn't it?

no its incorrect.

first ....Wikipedia, anybody can create anything on the site, its not the most reliable source of info.....

second....both Adams and Jefferson were church going men, Jefferson went every Sunday while in Washington.

third...... Jefferson's bible is a quick reference book of the quotes of Jesus, and its contains that Jesus is divine and sits at the right hand of god.

forth..... if you look for quotes, Adams calls jesus a King?

this continued idea to promote things which are not true, is pretty sicking, to claim to be a christian, but not to believe in the blood and body of Christ, is laughable.

no its not simple.......in fact its utter confusion.

So you are upset that people value and practice Jesus's teachings but do not consider him divine, or a God? Seriously? If so it sounds like you are missing the entire point.

if people want to follow the teachings of Jesus, and don't want to believe he is divine, you should not call yourself a christian......BECAUSE in those teachings is Jesus divinity.

why are you and others picking and choosing what you wish to believe out of those teachings....you either believe in the bible or you don't.

by the way........you need to read Jefferson's bible, instead of people telling you about it.............you can read of Jesus divinity in it.

I don't care about what Jefferson, you or anybody else think about how others view their spirituality or religion, to be honest.

you don't care about Jefferson?. well why did you post a link, which talks about the Jefferson bible, trying to say hes a deist?

christian deism is a farce.....its created by people who have no knowledge of what Jesus is teaching.

how can someone proclaim to believe in the teachings of Christ, yet deny him?

Jesus - "it is better to not have known me, then know me and deny me"

It's quite simple really, a person just picks and chooses those moral teachings that fit with one's society and up bringing. There is no need to believe the preacher is a deity or son of a god, moral teachings can be moral with no need for divinity.

then what you are saying is.... i will believe in Jesus on this subject, but not this one.

Jesus tells you he is the son of man, "i am the way the truth and the life"

one cannot be a christian, without believing Jesus is the son of man, because that is being a christian.

peter to Jesus..."you are the son of god"..Jesus to peter, "you could not have know this peter ,unless it was revealed to you by god"

No, it was not.

And even if it was, that would be a reprehensible stance to take now.

laughable

It's laughable to you that other religions besides your own not being legally discriminated against? Tell me, what will you do when you're the minority, then, and whatever group is in power decides that it's really their religion and not yours that's protected?

trying to corrupt Christianity by people attempting to call themselves christian is laughable because its false and shows lack of knowledge.....to be a christian means you accept the teachings of Jesus and that teaching includes Jesus is the son of man, which Jesus tells you he is.

all you are others are attempting to promote is a lie, of calling yourself a christian but not living it........again to be a christian means you accept the blood and body of Christ to cover your sins......without Jesus as the sacrificial lamb, there is no Christianity.

The religion clause of the first amendment originally only applied to the federal government. It was the intention of the founders that religion was a matter left to the states. Thus there were actually official state churches in the early US. This is why it reads "congress shall make no law" rather than "states shall make no law". Incorporation, which came with the 14th amendment is what extends this so that it now applies to all states as well. That was obviously outside of the intentions of the founders. But I find myself thinking...."who cares?". We've evolved a lot since the time of the founders, who really cares what they thought?

That has nothing to do with what we're talking about. You said it was laughable that...

Did you think my original comment was to you? Why on earth would I care about your religious fixation? I'm talking about laws and this country and the constitution and things that are important, not your silly myths and special imaginary human sacrifice friend. What you believe in is the completely unimportant to anyone and everything that matters.

I return to my original statement, that of course the first amendment applies to all religions, and to lack of religion, too.

I agree. If they wanted it to be just protective of christians, they would have written it that way. Thank goodness they didn't; I believe that our tolerance of all faiths and non-faith is one of the things making our country great

I recently read that Lebanon's constitution says that "the State respects all creeds"; I thought that was cool. They have 18 recognized sects and religions.

if i made a mistake, and took you for being a person who supports the farce idea of christian deism, or calling ones self a christian who does not believe in Christ........you have my apology.

I'm pretty sure that you don't get to tell anyone else whether or not their religion "counts".

Damn right

i am 100% sure, for someone say they are christian and then say they dont believe in Jesus is the son of man .....is wrong.

because to believe in the teachings of Jesus, is to believe that Jesus tells us he is the son of man.

Jesus is the sacrificial lamb.

I am not sure how to make this any more simple. A person can follow the teaching of a person and not believe they are a God. Done. Simple. Did you follow?

I am a Christian Deist... Jesus's teachings are great but he is not the son of a God.

then your not a christian in any form.

but someone trying to dilute the christian faith.

I am not trying to do anything other than follow the teachings of Christ. Why you would discourage that is beyond me and is unchristian to boot.

delete christian, and your fine.

I am fine as it is and do not need your approval. Thanks though... I will practice Christianity and be a Christian the way that God intended it and not the way that the Church corrupted it...
