In an archdiocesan newspaper column, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said that American law has “taken upon itself the mantle of a religion and officially told its citizens what they must personally think or what ‘values’ they must personalize in order to deserve to be part of the country.”

He writes:

Since the biblical vision of what it means to be human tells us that not every friendship or love can be expressed in sexual relations, the Church’s teaching on these issues is now evidence of intolerance for what the civil law upholds and even imposes. What was once a request to live and let live has now become a demand for approval. The “ruling class,” those who shape public opinion in politics, in education, in communications, in entertainment, is using the civil law to impose its own form of morality on everyone. We are told that, even in marriage itself, there is no difference between men and women, although nature and our very bodies clearly evidence that men and women are not interchangeable at will in forming a family. Nevertheless, those who do not conform to the official religion, we are warned, place their citizenship in danger …

Swimming against the tide means limiting one’s access to positions of prestige and power in society. It means that those who choose to live by the Catholic faith will not be welcomed as political candidates to national office, will not sit on editorial boards of major newspapers, will not be at home on most university faculties, will not have successful careers as actors and entertainers. Nor will their children, who will also be suspect. Since all public institutions, no matter who owns or operates them, will be agents of the government and conform their activities to the demands of the official religion, the practice of medicine and law will become more difficult for faithful Catholics. It already means in some States that those who run businesses must conform their activities to the official religion or be fined, as Christians and Jews are fined for their religion in countries governed by Sharia law.

Cardinal George: US is adopting

Catholic New World - Cardinal's Column - A tale of two churches

Another outstanding observance from an outstanding mind.

The worst part of Christianity is its toxicity to tolerance and respect. It's a religion that can only generate war, violence and hatred due to its refusal to accept that other people (1) have different points of views and lifestyles, and (2) those people should be treated no worse, whether or not they pray to a different god..

Glad that Cardinal George sees the writing on the wall. Be loving, equitable and respectful, or be ejected out of our society.

This ties in rather neatly with something I've observed.

About a generation ago, the cry of the wicked was “Don't force your morality on us!” Foolishly, we, as a society, have allowed ourselves to be shamed and intimidated into tolerating and embracing evil, and now that that side has consequently gained the power to do so, the side that once cried “Don't force your morality on us!” now has no qualms or restraint against forcing its immorality on everyone.

Of course by “Be loving, equitable and respectful…”, you mean that we must accept evil and degradation, and treat it as equal to that which is good and wholesome—that we must never dare to call out evil for what it is.

And you accuse Christianity of being “toxic”.

People who swim against the tide are almost always ostracized. This is just the butthurt of a group who never had to deal with it before.

Poor babies

The sad thing is that people somehow to think this a new phenomenon

Discrimination is ok as long as it's not happening to me.

I'm guessing you don't know a whole lot about the history of the Catholic Church in the United States...

Perhaps not. If its something they dealt with then this kind of complaining is self indulgent releasing of stress

actually it has more to do with the so called open minded and tolerant people not being so open minded and tolerant that they claim to be.

Frankly, I think it's a legitimate complaint.

An entire religion (no, group of religions) is basically being told that it has to change it's beliefs in order to cater to one minority interest, or that they will face complete social and political ostracization for failing to do so.

I'm sorry, but that's not "tolerance." It's bigotry and social authoritarianism going in the other direction.

In the southeast Catholics were oppressed and faced discrimination, threats and violence. (largely because it was most associated with recent immigrants) In parts of the northeast the Catholic Church was virtually an arm of the government. For example, the Catholic hierarchy determined which movies could be shown in New York.

... and women in leadership positions too! *gasp* EVIL!

Really? How many openly gay presidents has the US had vs. openly Catholic? How many senators, congressmen, mayors, police chiefs, etc?

Suddenly those in the majority are realising discrimination isn't nice.

So?

Pacifists were reviled during periods of US history

People who are of a minority political opinion face disadvantages

People who love the "wrong" gender were ostracized

People with mental handicaps were taken advantage of

Hippies were hated

The list goes on.

If society were good enough that all were valued then it would be one thing but this is just a group who used to persecute others having to deal with their own crap

Where is anybody making you have a gay relationship? Are you being forced to gay marry anybody, or force you to get an abortion?

And they are special because ... ? They are the only group to dace this?

So then you admit that the Left's cries for "tolerance" are hypocritical and insincere?

Hell! In many parts of country, Catholics were lynched right alongside blacks.

It wasn't limited to just the Southeast either. In Indiana around the turn of the Century, I believe, a couple of random foreigners were very nearly lynched by an angry mob of hundreds after getting off a train, simply because someone started a rumor that one of them might have been the Pope travelling incognito!

No tolerance is ever universal. Never has been. Society has too many conflicting interests to satisfy everyone st the same time. The real advantage of modern social organization is we no longer killer each other over it as often

the cardinal is a liar no one is kicked out of the country for their religion

and no one has to approve of homosexuality

they cant let their disapproval trample the right and freedoms of others

he might have appoint that people with unpopular views cant get elected but im not sure how that's wrong or being dictated by the government and not we the people

screw this cardinal

but you seem to be evil in this case

...Intolerance of active intolerance and bigotry is a good thing. Nobody is stopping you thinking it, just don't oppress others with your bronze-age attitudes.
