Despite the ongoing crisis, the Conservative Party of Canada still has a pressing leadership election to get to this summer. Former PC leader and Defense/Justice Minister Peter MacKay takes on established Ontario MP Erin O'Toole with a few social conservatives in the mix as well. I truly believe that whoever wins this leadership will take down Justin Trudeau and take our nation into the future with a conservative majority government. I've attached an article outlining the basic principles and platforms that each is campaigning on, hopefully we can gain some engagement.

Much as I dislike Trudeau (lifelong Liberal who sat out the last election) if Sheer and his Conservatives had been in charge through this crisis we'd be as divided and toxic as the US finds itself.

Sheer was just never PM material.

A guy who looks like he screams sorry when he cums.

Hopefully whoever takes up the reins will return the CPC to the days when they were the Progressive Conservatives. We need those guys back. Conservatism ceased being useful in Canada when they became social conservatives and populists. Without that change, they will continue to slide into irrelevance.

I dunno OlNate, I think there is a nativism bubbling under the surface that is far more toxic than most people realize and all it takes is one lethargic election where normal people stay home and all of a sudden you've got a bit of a problem and immigration is the key to unlocking that scenario, under the surface there are many Canadians that like people like Trump, I've spoken to some of them, it's bizarre...

I hope I'm wrong but since I came to this country, I've noticed a change in general in this country and it worries me.

Harper's evil was still evil, though more in service to corporations, big oil and plutocratic authoritarian ideals than to racist/xenophobic demagogues, despite a prolific streak of 'good ol' social conservatism. If your desired 'return to form' is to go back to the days of the freedom infringing, fossil fuel expounding, science muzzling and democracy undermining Harperites, I'm not interested whatsoever. Like with most rose goggled reminiscing of the 'good ol days', turns out in reality they were actually kind of terrible:

Those groups of people have always existed in Canada. It was just not " acceptable" to show that side of themselves at least from the early 90's or so (at least here in Western Canada)

Growing up in Calgary I can remember the way Pakistani's, Indians and Chinese (largest visible ethnic groups at the time) were treated in the 80's and early 90's quite openly by a lot of European Canadians. The same people are here in general (sure a lot of them are on the elderly side now, but their kids are still around and were exposed to their parents bigotry.

We can see how Native Canadians are still treated most western provinces, and western Ontario.

What has changed is the social acceptance, Trump and his band O bigots has made it acceptable to show bigotry again. So people do. The economic crisis that Alberta is going to face is going to make it much worse. Visible minorities will I am sure feel it and see it over the next few months. East and South East Asians will feel it the most because of politicians placing blame on China. You can see people responding to that when commenting about what people eat etc in Asia. Even people I have thought were above that type of thing

Oh, I most certainly hear you there. I think we need to be vigilant, in terms of who gets the leadership. But I think that if they were smart, they would understand that though their base is noisy, it's not yet representative of the greater number of old school conservatives (people who voted for conservatives prior to Harper, basically, as that appears to be where the tide turned for Canadian conservatism, and not until his second term), let alone the center of the country, who currently vote Liberal. It's not good strategy to remain on that path.

But then I'm the kind of dude that votes every time, regardless of whether or not the sky is falling... ;)

I agree, though, we do have our share of assholes. They've always been there, but these are brave new times...hehe... Our Trump supporting friends to the south have done much to embolden them to venture forth from under the slimy rocks that previously housed them.

hehe...oops, most definitely preaching to the choir, bud. :)

The Harper Conservatives aren't the "good old days" I'm talking about. In fact, I'm not sure there ever were "good old days"....just "better days". The Progressive Conservatives used to be a much better party, a much less "evil" party...but for that, you've got to go to before Harper lost his mind, right around the mid-way point of his second term. True story, before that I always voted Conservative. His performance leading up to the 2015 election not only got me voting Liberal, it got me involved in politics and campaigns.

Fact is, Harper got us through 2008 pretty nicely, we fared much better than our friends to the south, for example. Then he began planning for his reelection, and started listening to that Australian dude. A lot of Conservatives became Liberals through all of that.

Ah, hell, should have read a little further, I could have just said "what he said"... :)

Sadly, living in Eastern Ontario, I get dragged into listening to the rantings of Conservative friends who have spent too much time with the wrong kind of social media. I don't think the problem is regional anymore.

I'm dead.

Ol'Nate:

The irony of passing on from a one-liner in the midst of a global pandemic is rich. So you must rest in peace, no chortling or giggling now. There's a good stiff.

Cheers and be well.

Honestly, Harper went off the rails well before that; the time line on some of his worst deeds certainly predates 2012-13 as per the linked articles, and the major reason we did so well in 2008 comparatively is more due to the systemic health of our economy as a direct consequence of long-standing norms and regulations (for example, we actually had financing standards unlike the US at the time) and lack of exposure to derivatives than anything he specifically did.

lol...while I don't normally find myself in the role of a Harper apologizer, a conservative not making things worse is actually a compliment by today's standards.

But I do not like Harper. I'm thinking back long before he appeared on the scene. :)

I had some co-workers (one of which was a massive Trump fan) who even early on, just full on "Yeah this is biological warfare against us by China!".

Like I have my issues with the Chinese Government in this situation and I know me and The Good Lord here don't see eye to eye on that particular issue but the racialism that may emerge from this is starting to worry me a bit, my wife is Asian (not Chinese) and the other day in the grocery store, she was singled out by the cashier to move to the back of another line, they weren't closing that register or anything, she was told, specifically, to move into another line and she was so shocked she just kinda was like ok and went, but the people behind her weren't told do and she was about to put her stuff on the conveyor, she was the only Asian she remembers seeing around any of the lines.

I've sent an inquiry to the company to ask why this occurred and no surprise, they aren't getting back to me.

Can I ask what part of the country you're in?

I'll just say the West.

Ok, I thought so, based on past conversations, I just couldn't remember. We're likely viewing things from a different set of experiences...when you live in the asshole of a country, you're gonna have a lot of stinky days.

I'm so sorry your wife had to deal with that. All I can say is that if I were there, I would have said something. I think more of us need to do that, when presented with the opportunity. This **** only goes away when we send these guys back under the rocks they crawled out from. It becomes normalized through failing to respond.

What happened to your wife is what I was expecting was going to happen 4 months ago. People in general are unable to separate people from the country. We have seen Asians getting randomly punched in Vancouver.

If I am not mistaken you have children now, don’t be surprised if they get bullied in school because they are Asian especially from other kids parents. Although where you are might not be much of a good problem

I'm not worried about them, my genes must be pretty strong because they don't appear very visibly half anyway, but even despite that, people are pretty ok around here, I don't expect anything like that, if someone dared though, oh man they are gonna get it from me, wish I'd been at the grocery store though that day.

Mortician's sense of humor, bud. That giggling sound you hear? That's me haunting you.... ;)

Here's hoping you and yours are safe and healthy. :)
