Trump wants to ease them...

Trudeau wants caution...

Trudeau says US-Canada border restrictions won't be lifted anytime soon | TheHill

The moratorium on cross-border travel has been in 30-day bites and the latest deadline is coming in a week or so. So how will it play out if Trump is insistent on it reopening to help the return to "normal" but Trudeau still resists? Should the closure become unilateral? Can it open unilaterally, i.e. with Canadians allowed to cross but not Americans?

I believe the answer is, 'No', unless Canada allows it to occur. Canada can bar their citizens from entering the States, just as Trump bars Americans from entering Cuba.

The time has come for Canadians to let their MPs know that we do not want the US/Canada border opened. Although some of the individual states have acted in a responsible manner with respect to COVID-19, many have not.

In my opinion we need to see proof that the U.S. has successfully dealt with this pandemic. As it is now, I feel if we open up to the U.S. we have another shutdown in our future. We have worked hard as a country to make the progress we have seen so far. Let's not take a giant step backwards just because we happen to have a neighbor with a leader who is more interested in PR than in leadership.

Call or email your MP. Let them know that you want the borders to remain closed. Our politicians still listen to us, if they know what we want. Take five minutes and tell them what we want.

If all MPs are singing the same tune, it will arm the Canadian Government for these and future discussions.

We do not open borders when the U.S. wants to open them. We open them when the U.S. shows results that convince us they should be opened.

Well that would be constitutionally questionable at least due to the constitutional right of citizens to enter and leave Canada as long as the US is willing to let them in.

Trump did not deal with the pandemic in his own country and he's not overly concerned about
other countries, so naturally a lot of Canadians would feel cautious about
opening the borders. Still I don't think even Trudeau would keep things going
as they are too long. Judging from Trudeau's comments it sounds like at least a couple of months.
