I couldn't believe it when Trudeau got away with what was clearly criminal abuse of power with his interference in the SNC-Lavalin case, but he's outdone that and very few seem to have noticed. His attempt at introducing legislation to fight COVID-19 that included suspension of parliamentary oversight for 21 months was nothing less than an attempted coup. He was raised to think he was the Prince of Canada, and he's acting the part.

Trump gets all the attention. Trudeau and Putin can do whatever they want cause nobody is looking at them.

Very, very interesting.
Some from your country actually don't mind his behavior while figuratively attempting to kick my president in the nuts for his "alleged" abuse of power.

I don't know how "teflon" he's gonna turn out to be. Between Lavalin, the pipeline purchase, the non-response to the protests and trying to go end-around the Greens and NDP with his 'emergency measures' I don't see him in Sussex Drive past the next election.

Stevecanuck:

PM Trudeau hardy attempted a coup. His party wrote legislation which would have sidelined Parliamentrary oversight of money appropriations and expenditures for 21 months, allowing the minority Liberal Government to behave like a majority government during that period of time. The parliament rejected the ploy and shut the Liberals down. The powers were denied and the legislation passed without them. So, no coup. Had the Liberals attempted to force through such changes by cabinet order while proroguing parliament, then you might have had a case for a coup. This was just Liberal stupidity which was caught and stopped by the PC Party and especially MP Scott Reid. Asking for additional powers does not equate to seizing them unlawfully. So, no coup, just sneaky politics which was caught and shut down.

Cheers.

Prorogue. Bypass. No difference. In both cases the government rules minus parliamentary oversight. So, yeah - coup. Canadian style. He said please first.

stevecanuck:

The Cambridge Dictionary defines coup or coup d'etat as:

A sudden illegal, often violent, taking of government power, especially by part of an army.

What the Liberal Party did is not illegal (asking for extraordinary powers is not illegal, did not involve violence, did not take government power (as the political gambit failed) and was not preformed with the aid of the armed forces of Canada. So it was most definitely not a coup. Hyperbole =/= fact or reason.

Cheers and be well.

As I said - Canadian style.

Net result in terms of one-party rule - the same. Parliamentary input = 0.

No, not even "Canadian-style", whatever that is. Nothing illegal nor forceful occurred, therefore no coup. Words have meanings and "coup" does not describe what happened or could have happened had the Liberals got away with their gambit. If it did then there would have been coups here during WWI and WWII when Federal Government power was increased greatly by agreement between major parties. Had the parties disagreed and blocked the consolidation of power by the Borden and MacKenzie-King governments, no coup could have been claimed. So your hyperbole does not meet the definition of coup, no matter how you try to dress it up in folksy Canadian clothes.

By your definition of one-party rule, every majority government in Canada is a coup. That's just silly.

Cheers.

Nope. Even majority parties have to have parliamentary approval, and that is the point you won't recognize. So, we've each had our say. I'm out if you're just going to repeat yourself, thereby forcing me to repeat myself.

Let me take another stab at this, and eliminate the word 'coup'. Trudeau tried to nullify the results of the last election, and therefore parliamentary oversight. He tried to establish himself as absolute ruler for a 21 month period, thereby undermining our system of government. It was a rather tepid attempt given how easily he accepted the almost universal "Go **** yourself" from the other parties. But still, it was an attempt, and it should not go unpunished. Just add it to the list of reason for which he should resign in disgrace.

Stevecanuck:

I agree with your first two sentences completely. The "absolute ruler" stuff is however more unnecessary hyperbole. I also agree with everything you wrote after the absolute ruler stuff. The dauphin must have his botty spanked hard after the Covid-19 crisis abates.

Cheers.
