Asia Bibi, the Christian woman who spent eight years on death row in Pakistan for blasphemy, has released her first public photograph since she fled to Canada last year.

Ms Bibi, who lives under a new identity in a secret location and still faces death threats from Islamic extremists, released the picture ahead of the launch of her autobiography yesterday. They offer the first glimpse of the 49-year-old mother of four whose fate gripped and divided Pakistan and made her an international cause célèbre.

Death row for blasphemy? I should be up there on the same list for some of the things that came out of my mouth in grade school. But Canada is too cold for me. New Hamster was bad enough.

I guess she will take obeying the law more seriously from now on.

I tried to get Liberal MP and Pakistani-born Muslim Iqra Khalid to take the lead on demanding that Pakistan release Asia Bibi. She utterly ignored every email and phone call from me. Not one word. Zip. Nada. Zero.

I hope the balance of Ms. Bibi's life is long, safe and happy and that she enjoys a measure of security and tranquility in her day to day affairs. I also hope that she can be reunited with any of her family who wish to join her here.
