lol...no one is attacking Canada. It would result in WW3. No one wants anyone else to have Canada, other than the Canadians. Sure, they may try to play with our elections, but they'll find out we're not so easily manipulated....we're simply not mad enough. :)

BC would make an awesome 51st state.

Just saying.

There's going to be a struggle over the Noth Pole area. Especially if oil is found.

:lamo You don't want that bud...it would take all the other states down a notch. ;) Plus, BC is probably our most left province of all...think of it like California, but polite. Nah, man, you definitely don't want that... haha

Republicans would never stand for it; hell aside from maybe Alberta and Saskatchewan, the idea of annexing any populous Canadian province would fill them with absolute dread assuming they had representatives and EC votes.

It can be sold as a counter balance to accepting Puerto Rico as the 52nd state.

Fledermaus:

Florida, Puerto Rico, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine would make great Canadian provinces!

I can't believe I am agreeing with the ever-alarming Litwin, but Canada needs to refocus our military on Arctic defence as soon as possible. We need to buy or build double-engined jets with far longer ranges than our aging F-18's for interdiction and fighter-bomber support. We need to buy or build vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) jets which can be operated under severe Arctic conditions and which can be dispersed and concentrated easily while operating from flexible FARPs in conjunction with helicopters. We need to build or buy nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines as diesel-electric boats will just not cut it under the Arctic Ice Cap. We need to build or buy some nuclear-powered icebreaking helicopter and VTOL armed assault ships and more ASW frigates and AA destroyers to protect them. We need at least four light ASW carriers and lots of mine layers/sweepers to protect our Pacific and Atlantic coasts. We need icebreaking mine layers and mine sweepers for Arctic operations. We need at least four and up to eight mobile light Arctic/Air-mobile/Marine/Mountain trained infantry brigades to defend the Arctic Archipelago. We need more strategic airlift capacity to move and support such brigades. We need attack helicopter and utility helicopter airlift battalions to support our light brigades in the field during combat. We need light artillery which can be moved by utility helicopters into and out of fire positions.

Ironically the biggest obstacle to this is the USA which wants use to stay out of the Arctic as a military force and really opposes Canadian nuclear-powered subs and icebreaker assault ships.

Cheers.

Agreeing with a bigoted war monger? I just lost a lot of respect for you.

PoS:

Even a broken clock is right twice daily, so while I disagree with what I perceive to be Litwin's motives, I begrudgingly acknowledge that there is too much weakness in Canad's military capacity to protect its Arctic sovereignty.. A strong defense can avoid war while a weak defence can invite it. There can be no Canadian Crimea in the Arctic at the hands of "little white men".

There are no VTOL jets that we would want to operate up north. The only one in the west currently is the F35B and it requires environmentally controlled hangers to protect the stealth coating. Its range would be an issue. For the north jets with very high range would be best (drop tanks would be acceptable).

Now as for the other suggestions, that would require a tripling of the defense budget, which is not going to happen, under any government outside of an actual war

Regarding VTOL jets we need a double-engined VTOL fighter-bomber which is a reliable piece of kit and not a hanger-queen. So the F-35B is disqualified. Since such a jet would not be an air-superiority fighter, it could be significantly lower tech and thus cheaper than something like the F-35B. If no such jet is available, off the shelf, we should design it and build it ourselves.

I propose using the British "Batch" system to build up the Canadian Navy. Under such a system you can build up a navy reasonably economically and can improve each iteration of a ship/boat as you go, gradually improving the product as designers learn more. The alternative, to wait until war is upon us, is foolhardy. Savings in defence spending could be found by gutting NDHQ and by subsidising the builds through zero-interest loans from the Bank of Canada.

No such jet exists, so we would have to design and build our self's. Development cost a good $4 billion each plane construction cost $100 million, with potential sales of 60 planes. (each plane likely direct cost of 160 million).

Each new naval ship we are buying (based on the Type 26) is likely to be 1.4 billion each. That is for a frigate type of vessel. The second lowest capability of ocean going vessels (the US LCS being the lowest )

To pay for that expect an increase of $30-40 billion a year, on top of what we spend. How much of an increase in taxes, and/or decrease in services do you think Canadians would accept to pay for that

lol...well, per my original statement, no one's gonna let you have it. We're like the last virgin in the world...everyone wants to believe a place like Canada still exists. You know you guys would just come and mess it up.
