Well we are half a year out from the expected Federal election in Canada. What are the Issues or Party Platform Points which you think must be addressed in this election?
For me the big issues are:
Greater emphasis on bilateral trade deals rather than multilateral trade bloc deals which establish preferential protections and advantages for established and powerful firms at the expense of small and medium firms.
Retaking the Bank of Canada back to its original purpose of funding government infrastructure programmes at low interest rates rather than relying on higher interest providers in the private sector.
Using government regulation and anti-combines laws to restrain or break up oligopoly or monopolistic-competition in the Canadian economy.
Supporting the creation and the conversion of moribund traditional firms into cooperative capitalistic firms with employee shareholders. An end to income trust firms by moratorium.
The creation of a international movement to create "pernicious technology taxes" and "electronic transaction taxes" in order to disincentivise firms from replacing human workers with technology-based production, service and management systems and to restrain capital mobility (flights of capital). This will stop firms from undermining labour markets and moving to jurisdictions which permit such behaviour.
Fostering Arctic development and Canadian Arctic Sovereignty to protect Canadian Polar Interests. This should be coupled with a large investment in the Canadian Armed Forces in order to build the Naval, Air and Land warfare capacity to dominate the region if principled negotiation is thwarted.
Ending the Indian Act and settling disputes and claims by First Nations and Metis Peoples. Getting First Nations institutions to take the lead in solving the obstacles to their full potential with real support by the Federal Government with the proviso that while autonomy may be possible, political independence as separate states is off the table.
Senate reform, electoral reform and the revitalisation of democracy in the face of creeping oligarchy.
Two parallel national service programmes. A traditional one where persons 17-21 train and then serve as peacekeepers and disaster-relief cadres commanded by regular Canadian Armed Forces officers and serve throughout the world. A second domestic national service programme where persons 17-18 train and serve as domestic non military personnel to build infrastructure, reforest, restock, recover and clean up damaged ecosystems, serve as support for educational systems, public health systems, day-care systems, youth mentoring and aged care programmes, etc. for three years. Time spent in both programmes would guarantee access to higher education and vocational training programmes both during the years of service and after for free.
Cheers.
