Treasury Board President Jane Philpott resigns from cabinet citing SNC-Lavalin affair - The Globe and Mail

Jane Philpott, one of the stars of the Trudeau cabinet, has resigned as Treasury Board President, saying she has lost confidence in the government and citing the pressure exerted on former colleague Jody Wilson-Raybould to abandon the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin.

“I have been considering the events that have shaken the federal government in recent weeks and after serious reflection, I have concluded that I must resign as a member of cabinet,” Ms. Philpott said in a resignation letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

OTTAWA — Treasury Board president Jane Philpott resigned Monday from the federal cabinet, saying she’s lost confidence in the way the Trudeau government has dealt with the SNC-Lavalin affair.

“A minister must always be prepared to defend other ministers publicly, and must speak in support of the government and its policies,” she said in a resignation letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Given this convention and the current circumstances, it is untenable for me to continue to serve as a cabinet minister.”

Philpott’s resignation comes just less than a month after former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould resigned from cabinet amid allegations that the Prime Minister’s Office improperly pressured her to stop a criminal prosecution of Montreal engineering giant SNC-Lavalin.

IMHO- The law is to strict.
But Trudeau is facing regional, national and internal stresses over his leader ship within Caucus

Lastly- Kerist on a Krutch - we have leaders from all 3 parties that are to be honest, not the best we have.

He's no Trump, that's for sure. JT is the definition of an empty suit.

Know what strikes me? That's two cabinet members who have resigned their posts but stayed in caucus. I wonder if there isn't a movement afoot whereby Trudeau will be the one going and they want to be around still when he does?
Tell you this though- I've always voted Liberal when I voted but the only way I'd vote in this next one is if I lived in Vancouver-Granville. I heard a guy on a CBC call-in show say he wouldn't be voting for the Liberal incumbent in his riding but he is going to volunteer in Wilson-Raboult's (sp?) campaign.
I wouldn't mind atall atall if we got another woman PM, one named Jody W-R.

Trump and his supporters are the laughingstock of the world. Anything to say on topic tho?

Are you sure you want to hear more from him?

He raped Trump in the trade negotiations. It was (or should be) a national embarrassment for you guys.

Forget about it, LET it GO, no one will sponsor you. DEAL with it.

"Given this convention and the current circumstances, it is untenable for me to continue to serve as a cabinet minister.”

That's redundant. She should get better editing for a letter of resignation.

To use a big word and then define it is a pretty bad redundancy.

Really? He is viewed in Canada as someone that cannot stand up to Trump.

Yup; that must be the reason why Canada's economy is flat-lining ... (grin)

"Canada’s economy practically came to a halt in the final three months of 2018, in a much deeper-than-expected slowdown that brings the underlying strength of the expansion into doubt.

The country’s economy grew by just 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter, for an annualized pace of 0.4 per cent, Statistics Canada said Friday from Ottawa. That’s the worst quarterly performance in two and a half years, down from annualized 2 per cent in the third quarter and well below economist expectations for a 1 per cent annualized increase.

... business investment dropped sharply for a second straight quarter ...

Canada’s economy practically grinds to a halt — and nobody saw it coming | Financial Post

And now to the US:

"Consumer spending continued to grow solidly and, most encouragingly, business investment growth recovered sharply after a dip in the third quarter. Despite big external headwinds and financial market volatility in the fourth quarter, U.S. firms are not retrenching sharply on capex.”

US and Mexico had agreed on their new "deal" by late summer, while Canada left the negotiations' table ... and had to come back in late September ... ha ha ha
and the result of that fabulous "rape":

Canada - 4th quarter business investment dropped
USA - 4th quarter business investment recovered sharply

...Given that we're probably going to be paying tens of millions more at least for medications as a result I'm not so sure of that ( Will USMCA affect Canada'''s drug prices? Depends on what happens next, experts say | CBC News | The USMCA explained: Winners and losers, what's in and what's out - Macleans.ca ) . The renegotiated trade agreement was basically NAFTA but worse for Canada overall, and did not resolve the steel and aluminium tariffs.

Not a Trump fan by any means, but let's not resort to disingenuity to puff up Trudeau when he's caught with his pants down.

Voted Reform in 88. Chretien later thru his terms. Both were focused on the fiscal ffn mess we were in.
Tons of pain were inflicted
As an ex Soldier, I knew our budgets would be slashed.
Hoped things would change when the economics were in balance. Well economically it happened, budget and leadership wise, Cons/Libs/NDP/Bloc all walked the line in screwing the Military

After all we are known for stepping up, ones that can be there, but we always begin with a tattered Military.
Past wars are not what we should prepare for.

Now on topic- we are face with Scheer, the Dairy Guy, NDP Singh, damn lucky he won his seat or he was gone, will not last long after the next General, and Trudeau.

Well he is what some people say.
IMHO Trudeau has been a major & massive disappointment. He has no inner Chretien.

... but there is a cretin within him ...

Yeahright. Who told you that? You don't even know how Trump is viewed in the US, never mind Canada. Trudeau is viewed here as neatly handling the idiot you guys stood up in front of him. It might be the only positive thing most Canadians have left to say about him. At least he made Trump look like the nothingburger he is.

Anyone else think Pedro Pascal should play him in the movie?

Lol. Trudeau - handling Trump? Canada got nothing in the deal - you saw his face on tv?

Furthermore....

Why are we in the middle of a dispute between China and USA?
Why is China hurting us - and yet, at the same time China continues trade talks with USA?
Who do you think is getting "handled?"

I don't see any other nations "robustly" speaking in defense of Canada against China! Not even buddy France or Germany! Trudeau had to beg for support!

Lol.....I'm inclined to imagine that China and USA deliberately want to teach the sanctimonious
young Trudeau a lesson! :lamo

Trudeau is viewed by Canadians - majority are anti-Trump - as someone who "stood" up against Trump, only because they see what they want to see!

Truth is....our woes started with his......big mouth.

That's news to me. The change in Canada's contribution to trade with the US is pretty insignificant.

Further, the US has a $25 billion services trade surplus with Canada. I don't consider that being "raped".

I was refering to the fact that Trump said the conflict resolution process had to go (it didn't) and Canada had to open up it's dairy market (we didn't).
