SNC Lavalin scandal

I don't have any opinion on this event, but I have to say that the CBC News article was exactly what a news article should be: Comprehensive, fact filled and without bias. I tip my hat to that organization.

From what I have read it is actually making Trudeau more popular in Quebec.
Legault doesn't want them taken to court but the media all seem to be taking the Liberals to task on the issue. Trudeau if he actually did try to influence the justice minister has commited a serious ethical violation with constitutional repercussions.

I havent seen much in the way of average people being with Trudeau on this. Remember SNC Lavalin is involved in the MUHC scandal that cost Quebeckers millions

Probably but there's not enough seats in Quebec to save him.
He might pull this off yet, he looks a little more humble than his dad but if the Trudeau arrogance kicks in this might kill his career as party leader and Prime Minister.

They're a pretty decent news source, especially since they've become more regional. Out here in the West and in the Maritimes we used to think they were too Ontario and Quebec centered but they're good now. I listen to CBC radio while I work- not much music, more news and commentary and comedy and feature stories, kind of like radio used to be.

My goodness, you had something positive to say about Canada - our national media source, no less!

I'm not even going to mention that you've inadvertently given praise to a socialist endeavor, lest I jinx it. In fact, I think this bought you the weekend off from my flippant responses.

Dang, Mycroft, we just might make you an honorary Canuck yet... ;)

Ya...for a government that was given the golden ticket, they sure do step in it a lot...one of the most frustrating things to watch. They need to get this sorted, and soon.

I don't know if this will play for the election, though - the alternatives may be less palatable. Certainly Scheer is nowhere different enough from Harper to make people feel easy about splitting the vote on the left. And I'm sure the Liberals handling of the NAFTA negotiations will be more significant to fence sitters than this.

Honestly, I'm scared about this next election. We need to stand one more time against populism in order to get a conservative party in Canada that looks like a conservative party in Canada. When they do (which they haven't since they dropped the Progressive from their name), I might even vote for them again. But we need one more term of ABC.

I always give credit where it is due...and criticism where IT is due.

But don't get too excited. If that article was a fluke, that news organization probably won't be getting too many hat tips from me. ;)

lol...shaddup. ;) Let me just enjoy it for a sec. You filthy socialist, you.

Corruption was the downfall of the previous Liberal govt (sponsorship scandal), it may be the downfall of this one. You can make a lot of mistake sn politics but showing disdain for the electorate with abuses of power never go over well.

Yeah, the piss off is that they said they had learned their lesson from 2011. It's that weird strain of stupid that I can't get my head around. Play by the rules, simple.

If they lose, they only have themselves to blame....though we'll see. Life hasn't been bad under them, and easily argued that it was better than under Harper. I get why people lose patience with the Liberal parties, on every level, though.

Yeah if they lose it is their fault but this scandal just may be a little too far out from the election to cause them a mortal wound. Time shall tell but if they keep mishandling it the way they have been it may have very long legs.

Queenmandy:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) was created by the Liberal Government of William Lyon MacKenzie-King in November of 1936. The Conservative government of R.B. Bennett created the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) by taking over the privately owned network of the Canadian National Railway (CNR) which owned radio stations created by the railway across the country. The CRBC was converted into a crown corporation in Nov. 1936 and the CBC was created.

Cheers.

Fun fact 1: that iteration of the CPC (1867 - 1942) was initially called the Liberal Conservative Party. How bout dat! ;)

Fun fact 2: Justin Trudeau was the first time I ever did NOT vote conservative in my life. It very much used to be a party worth voting for. Today...not so much, sadly. My 90 year old grandmother has said that if she lives to the next election, it will be the first time she in her LIFE that she will not exercised her right (duty, as she refers to it) to vote, due to the fact that there is no one she feels she can morally vote for - she has been a lifelong Conservative.

I sincerely feel very bad for traditional Canadian conservatives (which would include myself), who have no one to vote for, since there party was replaced by populists, fear mongers, and flat out despicable assholes.

It was a mistake to turn our honorable conservative party into a cheap American GOP knockoff. They used to do awesome things, like create the CBC. :) Now they're just obsessed with niqabs and Justin Trudeau's hair. They were so much better before they dropped the "Progressive" from their name.

The political fallout from the SNC Lavalin scandal has deepened with the resignation of Gerald Butts (the Prime Minister's Principal Secretary) from the innermost circle of the priminister's office. How far up the political food-chain will the rot of corruption go, I wonder? Will this scandal cost the Liberal Party and the Prime Minister victory in the next election?

Well some polls have come out and their numbers do do not seem to be changing, but in order to see the complete picture we will have to wait for the rolling averages to completely catch up and this scandal to play out.

Nanos just came out and Liberals have not budged from far ahead of the Conservatives and Campaign Research has the Conservatives in front, but they always do and are well known for being very strongly biased towards the Conservatives.

Seems Jody Wilson-Raybould was in the cabinet meeting today. Guess we will have to wait and see that that means

I’m still pissed over the electoral reform letdown. Now this. Stéphan Roy former executive from SNC was just acquitted from bribery and fraud charges because the case took too long to get to court. That does not look good.

Wilson-Raybould sure sounded impressive. She either has a super-human memory or she documented everything. It looks to me like Trudeau either has to admit to wrong-doing or call her a liar.
Maybe he's committing political suicide and that's why he released her from attorney-client privilege and cabinet secrecy.

I listed to it driving home toady I just kept saying out loud HOLY ****.
She eviscerated the Liberals and she is one. She also hinted there is more but Trudeau didn't fully remove her confidentiality obligations.
As to the notes she stated that she had ordered her staff to document everything fairly early on. I honestly expected either a bland learn nothing testimony or to hear her deny even if weakly the allegations.
I was very very wrong

Not at all surprised.

In fact the surprise would be if no such scandal occurred.

The Liberals and Conservatives alike are untrustworthy in office.

According to Wikipedia Andrew Scheer met with the SNC-Lavalin CEO to talk about the Delayed Prosecution Agreement and then, the next day, joined the NDP in calling for an investigation into government interference.
It's a chicken and egg thing, isn't it- does politics turn ordinary people into jerks and liars or does it attract that type of person?

Andrew Scheer is not in the govt and cannot put pressure on the AG to not prosecute. Now if he was in power do I think he would have acted differently? Maybe but probably only in method
