To a better neighbourhood? This one's gone downhill in a hurry.

Well the tetonic plates shift and turn by 2.5cm (1 Inch) a year but I think you'll take part of North America with you

As screwed up as US politics is today and as unpleasant as President Trump can be, America is still a damn good neighbour to have on our frontier. Americans are great people and America has the potential to be as great domestically as it is internationally. It just needs to change its political priorities and let new grass-roots parties exert more influence over domestic and international policy and spending.

So thank you America for being our good neighbours and know that we sympathise as you struggle through the current political turmoil. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so be strong and come out of the tunnel better than you went in.

Cheers.

And why exactly arrested Canada Mrs. Meng Wanzhou? Because Canada is a slave of the USA or because Canada thinks it has the right to force every nation in the world - specially all companies and inhabitants of the US-province China - to have to do sanctions angainst the US-province Iran? Germany for example sells not any longer weapons to Saudi-Arabia on very good reasons. Shall we start now to arrest every Canadian and US-American who breaks this embargo? Or means this the USA will start in this case a war against Europe because the USA hates it very much if someone is not an US-province? In this world are lots of nations equal - but Canada is for sure not the most equal nation of the world compared with the much more equal nation USA.

Lionman:

Canada has arrested and detained Meng Wanzhou because we have an extradition treaty with the USA. The State of Canada entered into that treaty voluntarily and was not forced into that relationship with the USA. Ms. Meng is wanted by US authorities as the CFO of the Hwawei company and US officials filed an extradition request should she ever set foot in Canada. Our treaty obligation was to arrest and detain her until an extradition hearing can be held to see if the American case against her justifies extradition to the USA. There is no anti-Chinese or pro-US intent here. It is just the cold and impartial administration of international law. Canada has a great deal to lose if China retaliates economically for this action but honouring our treaty obligations is as important as promoting our international trade relationships. We may suffer economically for this arrest and detention, but it was the right thing to do nonetheless.

The Iran sanctions are daft in my mind, but they are also a matter of law in America and thus the Americans made the extradition request which we acted upon. Hopefully in the extradition hearing the legal over-reach of US authorities vis a vis Iran sanctions will be considered by the court and seen as grounds to dismiss the extradition request. Then Canada might suffer economic reprisals from America too. Joy!

Cheers.

Germany - my country - is for example not able to give asylum to someone like the whistleblower Edward Snowden, because we have also an extraordinary idiocy with the USA. ... Which Canadian law broke Mrs. Meng Wanzhu? The crime to be a Chinese?

The State of Canada entered into that treaty voluntarily and was not forced into that relationship with the USA.

The reality is: no one is save in Canada, who likes not to kiss the ass of US-American politicans who are supported from the US-American system of injustice.

Ms. Meng is wanted by US authorities as the CFO of the Hwawei company

It's not an international crime to be a CFO. The big US-American companies are for example defrauders in Europe. That's a problem the EU tries to solve with the USA politically and not with soldiers or policemen.

and US officials filed an extradition request should she ever set foot in Canada.

To be honest: In this moment I thought you sound like a Nazi: "Innocent. I did what the laws said."

A good joke.

What a nonsense. China is a civilized nation. They make their business partners not responsible for the idiocies of other people.

The Iran sanctions are daft in my mind,

This is not only daft - this is dangerous. The agreement with the Iran was not the best - but it was an agreement. Now exist no agreement any longer and US-sanctions. The leading nation of the western world disqualified itself.

Okay - now you sound more like someone from Switzerland. When the allies bombed Switzerland in World War 2 German pilots defended Switzerland. The Swiss shot the German defenders down. Reason: violation of airspace.

As far as I know Ms. Meng broke no Canadian laws. However she is accused of breaking US laws and the evidence was strong enough to convince one or more judges to issue arrest warrants and an extradition request to Canada. Ms. Meng's arrest and the extradition request by the USA will be reviewed by a Canadian court before any action is taken.

The reality is: no one is save in Canada, who likes not to kiss the ass of US-American politicans who are supported from the US-American system of injustice.

I think you are exaggerating the legal jeopardy of "no one". Canadian law will protect Ms. Meng if the charges against her are found to lack substance and merit. There is no butt-kissing going on, it's a matter of legal procedure and the Rule of Law.

Agreed, but the USA is a different state with different methods and as long as it remains within the bounds of the Rule of Law and is not found by a Canadian court to be acting extra-jurisdictionally, then the legal procedure must and will continue forward.

To be honest: In this moment I thought you sound like a Nazi: "Innocent. I did what the laws said."

There is a big difference between loading innocent people onto trains for deportation to foreign labour camps and/or death camps on the one hand and following procedural law while insuring that the rights of the accused are respected in a fair and open legal hearing. So I reject the provocative simile.

A good joke.

It was not a joke at all.

What a nonsense. China is a civilized nation. They make their business partners not responsible for the idiocies of other people.

I agree that China is civilised but they are also notoriously corrupt in their business practices and in the relationship between the state and private/public businesses. I am not sure what you meant to say in your last sentence quoted above.

This is not only daft - this is dangerous. The agreement with the Iran was not the best - but it was an agreement. Now exist no agreement any longer and US-sanctions. The leading nation of the western world disqualified itself.

I agree that the US Government withdrawing from the Iran-nuclear deal was unwise and that punishing other states friendly to the USA for upholding the deal which they signed on to is downright stupid, but that's where we are at the moment. The sanctions are daft and the whole debacle has harmed US credibility and influence internationally.

Okay - now you sound more like someone from Switzerland. When the allies bombed Switzerland in World War 2 German pilots defended Switzerland. The Swiss shot the German defenders down. Reason: violation of airspace.

Woo-hoo! Go Switzerland! Shoot them Nazis down.

Violating trade sanctions is a crime under Canadian law as well, so that would probably be the grounds she is extradited to the US.

Canada supports the current US trade sanctions against the Iran?

Thank you for your adoration bit I can assure you that I am merely mortal. So no more talk of 'gawd' please.;)

As to America as a neighbour, they are very good folk whose government sometimes can be a problem but usually they're fine too. As to the present administration, well that's a special case so many Canadians will just wait it out until our friends to the south emerge into the warm dawn of a post-Trump period of US History. Anyway we have our own right-wing, populist, nut cases to deal with like the CAQ in Quebec and the Doug Ford Circus in Ontario. It seems we Canadians can be just as politically daft as our neighbours to the south. But these too shall pass I hope.;) ;)

Well have a grand New Year's Eve and the best of 2019 to you and yours.

Cheers.

*giggle*

American people, in my experience, are generally fine people. I agree. But the American system has bred a freak-show. A governmental system that now has the means to actually direct public opinion. This alienation of the public has not gone unobserved by many. Hence the rise of Nationalism.

Yes thanks...wifey-baby is a bartender, so I had a bar to hang out in, and teen-age boys at home drinking my beer.
I hope your NYE was more---orderly than mine.
