So I was reading this article on The Globe about the new party that essentially pushes for Alberta Nationalism. I personally find this hilarious. Apparently just because the rest of country does not like Alberta's pipelines Alberta must become more autonomous or separate entirely, I have no idea how either idea is supposed to fix that problem. I imagine it would be even easier for BC to reject a pipeline if Alberta was a separate country, not even to mention how it would probably be the end of the Alberta's economy regardless. If this party actually wins seats and does nothing but split the vote on the right I will be very surprised.

I imagine these are the same people who make fun of Quebec and are now using the exact same separatist and nationalist rhetoric as the PQ and CAQ, at least Quebec has a legitimate reason in being culturally different.

Sounds like canadians do not know how to get along with themselves as well as they do with foreigners..

This is basically no different from the idiots in Cali and Texas advocating for secession and it will get just as far (i.e. not at all).

It's not legitimate in Quebec's case, and it's certainly not legitimate in Alberta's (in addition to, yes, being grossly counterproductive to their economic interests).

Like most foolish separatist sentiments, this will die and fizzle out.

I think this is a show of frustration in PM Pixey-Dust.

Alberta should join the US and be North Texas

Basically what it is. They are politically very similar and they are both heavily dependent on oil but at least Texas has diversified away form only oil unlike Alberta.

Alberta- 4 million people who think the movie Easy Rider had a happy ending.

Awww common! I come from Alberta!

Ya...it's admittedly a conservative stronghold. Yet the mayor of Cow-Town is Indian, and the NDP is in power there, if I'm not mistaken.
Nice try but...all that was destined to end poorly...

Alberta's not going anywhere. They're just having their regular, quarter century ****up.
They do rely on oil revenue too much, but not many thought the end of Easy Rider was happy...

(grin!)
My mother was from Alberta and I've had this ongoing thing with my cousins.
Me- Best thing about Alberta is the road west.
Cousin- Best thing that ever came out of BC was an empty bus.

Both good!

I left Alberta for a reason. Climate.
But it'll always be home I guess.
And I will always think of BC as my playground.

I am Albertan, from Calgary

Now the mayor in Calgary is Canadian born (from Immigrants from Tanzania) ethnically from South Asia, and is Muslim. Calgary and Edmonton are more red tory conservative than hard line conservative. You have to go rural for that. Edmonton has been more liberal than Calgary for decades and more blue collar pro union. Calgary more white collar, with a libertarian streak from a large number of self made business.

Alberta separatism is something that comes up every few years, this one is not something I have heard about except on here and the National Post. Local radio has not brought anything up about it. Overall Alberta is far less conservative than it used to be, with a large amount of immigration from the rest of Canada and internationally.
