The world is burning with the fires of illiberal populism. The flames take on different shapes in different nations. There is Trump’s lurid xenophobia in America, Brexit in Britain, a right-wing government in Poland, a “People's Party” smoldering in both Denmark and Austria, Marine le Pen’s Front National in France, Geert Wilders’s “blond beastliness” in the Netherlands, and the Kultur-warriors of Germany’s “Alternative für Deutschland.”

But in the Canadian wilderness, the fire isn’t catching yet.

For decades, Canada has sustained exceptionally high levels of immigration without facing an illiberal populist groundswell. It is the most inclusive country in the world in its attitudes toward immigrants, religion, and sexuality, according to a 2018 survey by the polling company Ipsos. In a ranking of the most important Canadian symbols and values, its citizens put “multiculturalism” right next to the national anthem—and just behind their flag. In the U.S., those supportive of multiculturalism say they’re the least patriotic; in Canada, patriotism and multiculturalism go together like fries and cheese curds.
Interesting article on Canada, our history and Multiculturalism.

"Liberal Doom Loop" - sounds foreboding...

What's "illiberal" about Brexit?

National self-determination is "illiberal"?

The article is more of a biased opinion piece, but I do commend Canada's inclusiveness and friendly demeanor as a nation and people. I love being able to visit.

Good on Canada. It is one of my favorite countries. We could learn a few things from Canada.

I’ve only had to call myself once today, to make this post. Can’t wait till Yes Ma’am retires, to borrow Beau’s term.

AB/BC and Alaska, always one of the ways with a Ferry; that trip’s only matched by the Cascade Range for me; then there’s the Northern Forest of VT, NH, ME; the 4-corners are closer and awesome; always love the ID, MT, WY tri;

Good stuff on the way home on I-90. Then, it’s just fields of grain, ag on the brain, the meat complex; faster speeds help; always drive with my OTR brothers, and now sisters to edit.

British Columbia and Alberta are forever beautiful and humbling no matter the season. We would never turn down an opportunity to spend time in Canada. Calgary and Banff are among our favorites. Also, in my opinion, Montreal and Quebec City are as close to Europe as you can find in North America. We have yet to spend time in Toronto though we hear great things about it.

Rail Canada is outstanding. Great fun. We haven't taken the trans-continental train yet but it's on our list.

I've read that 20% of Canadians were born somewhere else, and we seem to be getting along just fine. It shows we've learned a thing or two since the bad old days when Canada was all lily-white and Brit or French.

My class pictures from my elementary school days in Calgary (1955 - 1961) were 100% white. Things started to slowly change after that.

Not completely biased, the History of French/English was a start when GB conquered Quebec

I don't know if polls on issues such as immigration are accurate picture of how sentiments are among Canadians. First of all, it's mostly about open borders , ie refugees/asylum seekers/illegal immigration, that has largely caused the rise of populism in Europe and the USA.

What is usually meant by "immigration" these days, is similar to the kind of "immigration" that Trump has been talking about.
Unvetted, queue-jumpers.

Canadian attitudes towards immigration hardening, poll suggests
By The Canadian Press
Tues., Nov. 7, 2017

OTTAWA—When he announced the federal strategy of ramping up the number of immigrants to Canada over the next three years, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen described it as what Canadians wanted and needed — especially with governments around the world closing their doors to immigrants and refugees.

It was a subtle jab at the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has cracked down on immigration in the name of the “America First” sentiment that got him elected a year ago Tuesday.

The timing of the 2017 study coincided with a spike in asylum seekers crossing illegally into Canada.

The influx generated heated debate about the integrity of Canada’s asylum system. The Opposition Conservatives have repeatedly accused the government of placing Canada’s historically high support for immigration at risk as a result.

Not many Canadians are in favor of what we see, those coming across the border, bypassing Border Security and claiming asylum/refugee status.

Time for the \govt to speed up hearing these cases and sort the real ones from those that are bogus
