Trump recently complained about Canada and said Canada takes advantage of the US in trade relations and then he signs a report saying the opposite of that:

‘A stunning rebuke’: President Donald Trump signs report contradicting his own views on trade, Canada | Financial Post

So does Trump just not know what he is talking about when it comes to trade and Canada and if so, why would you trust Trump on these trade talks? If Trump is basing his opinions on trade with Canada on fantasies rather then facts, I think that would be bad for the US and Canada.

NAFTA is a complicated subject. There's probably just a handful of people who understand it, and I'm not one (neither, apparently, is Trump) but I'm wondering if it's worth the aggravation. Trump seems to have a protectionist, my-way-or-the-highway attitude. Maybe it's time to let it die and go back to how it was before the Canada-US FTA. Pre- Reagan and Mulroney. We've got the Europe deal, got the TPP, talks underway with the Mercosur bloc (Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil)- be nice to get Chile into that mix- why not just go back to open market with the US? At least until a less isolationist administration is in place. Be awkward at first but if ties have to be cut...

Trump contradicts himself

This is hardly news worthy. And apparently not all that popular a revelation for those who happen to inhabit south of the 49th.

Fair enough, but if Trump is basing his trade policies on hobgoblins of his imagination, rather then facts, it will be bad for the US and its trading partners.

I agree fully, YM. Let me explain my statement. I wasn't saying that this shouldn't be discussed. It should be. FULLY AND COMPLETELY.

I was only remarking on what is incredibly obvious - that Trump contradicts himself on absolutely everything.

You know this to be the case because there is a dearth of folks wanting to discuss it further. It has to wear down those who voted for this total chump. [with chump I am being exceedingly generous]. And I suspect even those who didn't vote for him.

Carry on, please!

Point taken.

I have a feeling this NAFTA thing is more about trade with Mexico, than it is about Canada.

Except Trump has been complaining about Canada, South Korea, Germany, etc because Trump believes in this prescution complex where the US is some perfect moral super hero when it comes to trade and every other country is an evil super villain who wants to screw over the US. He has turned trade into a right wing culture war issue and has a very narrow outlook on this issue.

Trump is basing his trade policies on imagined slights rather then good economic policy, that is bad for the US, Canada and any other country.

You should probably relax.
Trump may not know allot about international trade, but he's not gonna commit hari kari.

I think you are under estimating his foolhardy and impulsive nature.

I doubt it. I 'think' Trump's biggest concern is to create jobs in the US. I also 'think' he's identified globalism as a major contributor to the economic woes of the US. And I 'think' he's right. I also 'think' my nation should be a little less eager to jump on the globalist bandwagon.

Canada is a middle power, soft power is the only for Canada to get ahead the world.

Also I think Trump's policies are driven by imagined grievances rather then solid economic facts. Trump thinks Canada is screwing over the US and wants to punish Canada for it, due to hobgoblins of his imagination rather then facts.

Well then we'll all have to wait and see.
Frankly I think your outrage at Trump's personality makes you think he's a moron.
While he is certainly not a very good politician, I don't think morons don't accomplish what this guys done in his life.

As for Canada, we've been the USA's biggest trade partner for ever. I doubt very much anyone's gonna do anything to change that.
