Hoo boy... well... I mean, it's probably not surprising, given how I represent here, that I'm not thrilled about it. I liked Rob, to be honest, though at the time I was still very much a conservative. I think he was deeply flawed, but his love for Toronto and his willingness, especially at the start, to do the right thing for it was very clear to me. Plus, I loved how he took on the establishment. He was populist, for sure, but he actually seemed to mean it, and want to make things better. I'm one of the few guys "on the Left" that will give him that credit.
But, I'm worried that Doug was only ever operating in his brother's shadow, and that he'll fall back on that same populism, but with none of the optimism that Rob worked with, and relying too heavily on creating division, a la Trump. I'm very hopeful that Christine Elliot gets it. She seems far more the traditional, "progressive" conservative, and might be able to work better with the other parties, which is what we need.
My hope is that whoever gets in gets in with a minority. Ontario politicians need to work together, and majorities are what has lead the Wynne Liberals to steamroll us with a lot of bad stuff. We need less drama in Ontario politics, and more work done on our behalf.
