I've wondered why Trudeau pulled a sudden no-show at the meeting. There wasn't a real explanation about it.
Our pundits....and our own tv news channels were all vague about it.
Here's the details:

'Screwed' by Justin Trudeau, leaders fume over scuppered Trans-Pacific Partnership deal

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has infuriated leaders of 10 other Asia-Pacific countries by pulling a sudden "no show" for the signing of a lucrative trade deal.

But after a lengthy delay, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe entered the room to announce the signing was off because Mr Trudeau would not attend.

An official familiar with the process summarised the frustration of all leaders in the room, who represent economies with a combined $12 trillion in GDP.

"The Canadians screwed everybody," he said.

Interesting. I wonder if he didn't show up because of the TPP or because of something else.

They're talking about something with Quebec. That he had "cold feet." I haven't read it yet.

Yeah, read that. But from what I can tell its just an assumption. No actual substance to it. Not discounting it. All politicians want to make sure their base will re-elect them. Just that there's no confirmation that that is the reason.

Conservatives are got up in arms when Canada wanted to sign it but are now angry that Trudeau doesn't want to. You just can't ****ing win, you and other Conservatives just have a blind hate for Trudeau.

I have no interest in the TPP so long as it lets corporations countermand and supplant national sovereignty, and challenge government legislation in closed, secretive, exclusive tribunals (including for entirely illegitimate reasons such as lawsuit speculation), nevermind the export of onerous/draconian IP laws, the general race to the regulatory/tax bottom it represents, and so on:

Until this is replaced with a transparent and inclusive judicial institution that incorporates feedback from all stakeholders, and its remaining problematic elements are amended/removed, TPP can either die in a fire or go through some very comprehensive reforms.

Lately there's been a fortunate suspension of some problematic IP elements per the CPTPP rendition ( Rethinking IP in the TPP: Canadian Government Plays Key Role in Suspending Unbalanced Patent and Copyright Rules - Michael Geist ) but many of the fundamental problems remain.

My understanding (and I can't remember where I read it) is that it has to do with child labour.

That would be a valid reason to me. :) China has horrible laws regarding child labor.

China is not a signatory, but essentially normalizing this via omission is one of many reasons the TPP is deeply flawed and generally a bad idea as it exists.

Hmm...I had thought that those pushing for the TPP courted China for it after the US withdrew?
