'Disdain and mockery:' Saskatchewan premier criticizes Governor General's speech

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says Gov. Gen. Julie Payette should avoid denigrating faiths that believe in a creator.

Payette has faced criticism for a speech last week that some say mocked people of faith and appeared to criticize people who believe in creationism and horoscopes.

Rex Murphy: Governor General appoints herself umpire of questions of faith and science

In this wonderfully diverse Canada that Ms. Payette now represents, was it her intent to ridicule the religious beliefs of so very many faiths?

Merely as prelude, we should point out that the difference between elected and selected is more than a matter of the letter “s,” and add that being assigned to a state ceremonial office does not confer oracular status on a person.

Was there an apology issued?

Hahahaha

Believing in creationism and horoscopes, frankly, both deserved to be mocked. Even my religion teacher in high school made fun of creationists.

Irrelevant.
You're not the Governor General.

I'm not? No way. That is truly shocking information

Why shouldn't people mock idiots?

Yes, why shouldn't they?
Why do you think the Space Cadet is getting mocked? :lamo

This old video comes to mind......

I wonder if the Gov General is a New Atheist?

The funny thing about being "mocked" by idiots like creationists and horoscopers is that they try so hard and yet only end up embarrassing themselves. Your post is case in point.

I suppose the whole thing is lost to you, why Payette is mocked - not just by me - but by media.
That her position plays a significant reason for it, you refuse to address.
You're trying to turn this into the religious vs Space Cadet. It's not.

You should read the materials I gave in the OP.

But, if that's what you think - that's what you think.

It's all much to do about little anyway, seeing how Payette spoke at a Science Policy Convention and addressed a wide range of undesirable BS that pervades a range from "health and medicine to climate change and even horoscopes" in certain media.

Payette scoffs at climate change skeptics during science conference - Macleans.ca

Religion found no mention at all and the idiocy of creationists, none. Just that Payette addressed voodoo science (not her words) flooding a learned society thru misinformation that has increased with the explosion of digital media.

The TRUTH about this thread is that it's just another manifestation of the OP's hatred for Dawkins and anyone like him (already alluded to in the first sentence of the first post by the "you-know-who") for which the OP seeks greater attention than her (very much waning) other thread in "religion and politics" is by now getting (the bulk of posts there consisting of her own posting frenzy).

Seeing how these constant mantras get kind of drowned by all the similar ones that surround them there, she started that one in the most inappropriate forum of "science and technology" as well, unfortunately for her it was moved to where it should have been in the first place.

This one is no different, it being in "international politics" is just another demonstration of the usual deviousness by which certain posters attempt to get more attention for their spoutings than those deserve.

The title alone says it all, clearly the OP can't tell the difference between a space cadet and a full-fledged astronaut but this is not about Payette anyway, it's about an obsession.

That being Canadian only by a the one cultivating it being Canadian as well.

Bottom line: Payette is the Governor General. She should have an idea what her position is all about. Yeah, yeah,yeah....you were an astronaut. But you're not wearing your helmet now. You're wearing a different hat.

According to popular Canadian astrologer Georgia Nicols, Canada's Governor General should be doing what she can to "keep the peace" with loved ones today and avoid the "planetary vibe" that is urging people to engage in power struggles and disputes.

The Governor General made clear in a speech to scientists at an Ottawa convention Wednesday she has a very low opinion of the validity of horoscopes, people who believe in creationism or those who don't believe in climate change.
Julie Payette Speech Mocked People With Religious Beliefs, Critic Says

Julie Payette plays a dangerous game for Liberals
I’m surprised there hasn’t been more backlash from First Nations. It would certainly wipe the smirk off Liberal ministers’ faces on the double

In a speech Wednesday in Ottawa, Governor General Julie Payette expressed exasperation that “we are still debating and still questioning whether life was a divine intervention or whether it was coming out of a natural process let alone, oh my goodness, a random process.” Payette’s little eye-roll at religion — “Oh my goodness!” — is hardly earth-shattering.
Chris Selley: With her dig at religion, Julie Payette plays a dangerous game for Liberals | National Post

OH MY GOODNESS, where has it been written that the matter is already settled without a doubt?
That, there was no divine intervention at all? Anyway....I digress.

It's not the message, but the tone that offended people.
I can understand why she'd talk about Climate Change - if she's promoting that people should take action to try to avert it.

But why include personal belief in Creation, or horoscopes? Don't we have the right to religious belief? Even if it's the occult? Why should that be anyone's business? How does that affect others?

Ezra Levant raises a good point.

Was Payette mocking the lady she represents - was she mocking her queen?

New Governor General mocks religious people (but believes in aliens?)

Canada's new Governor General is former astronaut Julie Payette. She has a lot of opinions, and she wants you to know them.

Except, that’s like a judge giving a political speech. Because the Governor General’s job isn’t just about cutting ribbons. It’s actually about being the Queen's representative, as well as the judge when it comes to constitutional matters, political crises and deadlocks in Parliament.

Yeah, we are still debating that. Because it’s a free country.

And because science isn’t decided by press releases or lobby groups.

When the country's constitutional arbiter mocks people within Parliament for holding a certain point of view, you can’t trust her to be a neutral, non-partisan judge, should a crisis ever reach that point.

As for people who believe in God,

the Queen happens to also be the head of the Church of England.

Someone forgot to tell that to Julie Payette.

How can we have a Governor General - who's supposed to be representing the Queen -
be condescending towards the Queen?

I think Juliette Payette should step down as Governor General.

Re: Our Very own Space Cadet: Juliette Payette

Believing in creationism and horoscopes, frankly, both deserved to be mocked. Even my religion teacher in high school made fun of creationists.

You had a religion teacher in school? Parochial school? No public school would have a religion teacher. I can't even imagine a teacher who makes fun of others being allowed to keep teaching. Making fun of others is anti-educational.

The idea that it's okay to mock someone who thinks different from you is based in fear.

No one can, or should, disparage the thoughts of others -- only their actions. You might truly think that the moon is made of blue cheese, but your thought harms no one. I might roll my eyes a bit if you told me that, but if you're not doing anything to harm me, disparaging you only casts a bad light on me.

I'm an atheist, but I learned a long time ago that making fun of religious people is only a sign of weakness. If they try to enact laws that I have to abide by, then all bets are off, but only those who are insecure in their own beliefs take pleasure at the mocking the beliefs of others.

It's a sign of immaturity.

Yes, I did. I went to a Catholic high school. And making fun of idiots is not "anti educational". There are some stances so idiotic that there is no reason to pretend that they have any basic in fact, or to treat them with any respect like they are legitimate opinions. Creationism is one of those. It's down right idiotic, and it has literally done its best for years to destroy education.

No, no one "fears" creationists. Put bluntly, they are morons, as is your basic fundamentalist. They may have a growing sway in parts of the former USSR where people have responded to years of atheism at gunpoint by going whole hog in the other direction, but the time where they ruled America is long over, and good riddance.

Making fun of people for believing in idiotic things hurts no one except the creationist's pride. And frankly, I don't give a damn about that.

That's funny, because atheists mock religion all the time. So clearly many people who think as you do disagree with you there.

When even a religion teacher not only rejects your craziness, but makes fun of you, then you know your ship has sailed long ago.

Ohhh..... okay. That's very, very interesting. So you are saying poster "tosca1" has an axe to grind with people who mock creationists, and took an incident which was only vaguely related to the subject and tried to warp it?

Statistically speaking there's a very high probability that intelligent life other than humans exists in the universe.

What was the evidence that the world was formed in "six days"( or seven, if you want to count the seventh day when God was said to have rested, of course)?

I get that you have warped the subject away from what is is truly about, but still....

To mimick her...wearing my shirley temple wig......OH MY GOODNESS! I don't care!
You still don't get it? That's irrelevant!

Read....and UNDERSTAND what you read!
OH MY GOODNESS. This subject has little to do with science!

If you want to know my arguments about that - go to Philosophy and read up on the Bible!
And, check out the position of the NAS on Theistic Evolution!

OH MY GOODNESS. You and Payette both need to read up on science updates.
You both need to read up other than Dawkins' bs!

OH MY GOODNESS. She's a space cadet!
And, if you want to join her space walk in her starry, starry moment - do it elsewhere.

This thread is about her appointed position as
Governor General of Canada
.

If you want to discuss scientific evidence, blah-blah-blah - go do your own thread, or respond to the threads that deal with them!

Now, having said all that and to try to get you on the right track.....

Do you think she should step down as Governor General for mocking the person she's supposed to represent -
the Queen?

She looks like "Weird" Al Yankovic!

That was a good lampoon, I must say.
Payette even looks weirder. Didn't they get enough oxygen up there?

Yes, you've thoroughly established that both facts and reality mean nothing to you. Only your little bubble, where you can fantasize all you want, matters to you.

I hate to break it to you buddy, I took a year long class on the Bible back in High School. I know full well what it says; I also know that idiots who apparently have never heard of the concept of "symbolism" read it literally. Those people deserve to be mocked.

Ah, is apparently being an astronaut--- which is a very hard thing to do, frankly--- is considered a prejorative now? Huh. I guess I shouldn't expect more from creationists who haven't accomplished anything of note in their lives other than being dead wrong.

No, I do not. As much as you and your cohorts hope that would happen.....not likely. That's the cost of believing in nonsense that society doesn't support.

quite apart from the poster insisting on not being able to tell the difference between a full-fledged astronaut and

clearly representing nothing other than the obvious need to get back at someone, in whatever childish manner.

Yep, it's pretty clear poster "tosca1" doesn't not have a case and is just upset a much more qualified person mocked the positions they support.

To them, not supporting creationism equates you to an atheist.

The fact that the overwhelming majority of churches, etc, do not support creationism doesn't seem to have crossed their mind.

Speak for yourself. You're the one in your bubble, and in la-la land with Payette.

You're the one who keeps taking this off-topic .....even though I've already explained to you what
this thread is all about.

Anyway......I'll have to ignore you for now, until you've got something to say that's relevant to the topic.

It is blatantly obvious what this thread is about and that it is not about what you're dishonestly (as usual) claiming.

The cowardice of putting someone challenging you on that onto ignore changes nothing.
