Looks like they're muddying the negotiation issues with other things! Or are they doing this deliberately to get NAFTA talks to fail? Or, they do know that it will fail?

Why bring in progressive priorities to the table - gender, labour, environmental and aboriginal issues?

The memo accuses the Canadian government of stubbornness on several fronts.

First, it suggests Canada has been too quick in rejecting American proposals as a "red line," or "poison pill." He said such knee-jerk refusals are only a viable strategy if you truly believe Trump cannot cancel NAFTA — an assessment Harper does not share.

Second, he suggests the government made a tactical error by co-operating too closely with Mexico. He says Trump campaigned on constant complaints about Mexico, not Canada, and Harper appears to suggest it was unwise of the Liberals to insist upon renegotiating a trilateral NAFTA: "How did we get ourselves in this position? … The elephant is Mexico … In fact, the U.S. is both irked and mystified by the Liberals' unwavering devotion to Mexico."

Third, he criticizes the Liberals for pursuing their progressive trade policies in these talks: "Did anyone really think that the Liberals could somehow force the Trump administration into enacting their agenda — union power, climate change, aboriginal claims, gender issues? But while the Canadian government was doing that, the Americans have been laying down their real demands."

Andrew Coyne: Is the Liberals’ NAFTA wish list a sign they are setting up talks to fail?
Do Trudeau’s people really think the Trumpians could be induced to accept bringing climate change into it? And gender? And Indigenous rights?

Maybe, Trudeau's team are secretly doing a lot of praying, and hoping that Trump will get impeached soon.....maybe, that's the "strategy?"

It does not matter what the Liberals do or if the Tories were in charge instead, Trump wants to get rid of NAFTA and he wants to make one sided demands on Mexico and Canada so they walk out and I think you are going to come up with some excuses on Trump is right to do that.

 C'est la vie.

Okay, but then how should Canada and the US regulate their trade relationship? NAFTA is not perfect, but what should replace it? It seems Trump just wants destroy things, without thinking of what should replace them.

I don't know what will replace it, if ever....but it should be fair trade.

You should just move. You'll be happier. Seriously, for your health. I'm concerned about you.

Doesn't "c'est la vie" means anything is cool with me?

You're the one who sounds very much agitated by this issue.
Perhaps you should get out of this thread - lie down for a while - have a cold drink.

lol...no, I got what I wanted in the last election, I'm feeling great. The Conservative impotent rage in this country, however, must be very frustrating and stress inducing. I think you would be happier with Trump as your leader. I just want you to be happy, dear friend... :)

Let us know how you feel this time next year. The hurting should start by then....

It would be nice to have someone like him......a Canadian PM who'd put Canadians' interest first, and foremost. :)

This clause would kill any automotive plant in Canada

One of the U.S. proposals unveiled this week would require that 50 percent of the value of all NAFTA-produced cars, trucks and large engines come from the United States, people briefed on the negotiations said

and this clause would kill any investments in Canada that were to export to the US

Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s call for a so-called NAFTA sunset clause would effectively trigger a renegotiation of the pact every five years.

Serra said the U.S. content requirements would distort NAFTA trade with “pure protectionism” while the sunset clause would choke off investment decisions with uncertainty.

U.S. negotiators also want to end a trade dispute settlement system that has deterred U.S. anti-dumping cases while erecting new protective barriers for seasonal fruit and vegetable growers. And though Canada and Mexico had sought more access to U.S. government procurement contracts, they were met this week with a proposal that would effectively grant them less.

The Canadian suggestions for including improving labour standards are just wishes and would not stop Canada from signing on to a new agreement. The 50% of value be made in the US would kill the automotive sector in Canada. It is a redline as it would destroy Ontario.

But what is fair trade? People keep on throwing around that term, without defining it. Really I don't think Trump understands trade and just wants to get rid of NAFTA to get a roar from the crowd, but has put no thought in what should replace it.

And what if Canada's interests are different from Trump interests? In that case do you want a PM that stands up to Trump or one who rolls over instantly?

Given the direction chosen in the last election, you hardly speak for anything approaching the majority Canadians...hehe

Anyway, have fun with it.

I was responding to Olnate's statement....so take it within that context.

As long as you are fine with a PM that would stand up to Trump if he threatens Canada's interests, then I guess we agree on something. Though think as a middle power, Canada cannot be as belligerent as Trump is.
