Millions in foreign funds spent in 2015 federal election to defeat Harper government, report alleges | National Post

“Electoral outcomes were influenced,” alleges the report.
In total, the 114 third parties spent $6 million and many of those third parties were funded by California-and New York-based Tides Foundation — which is known in Canada for holding numerous anti-Canadian oil campaigns.

In 2015, Tides Foundation donated $1.5 million of U.S. money to Canadian third parties in the election year, according to the report.
If true charges should be laid and.
Any Org that is complicit should also be prohibited from receiving funds outside of Canada for a long and specific period.
Those convicted should serve serious jail time.

The Orgs should lose any tax exemptions and be required to hire a Govt approved auditor to monitor their Organization for a number of years. These reports would be made public on a yearly basis by the Auditor.

I would wait to see if it is a credible report before anything, I think it is rather suspicious it was submitted in part by a Tory who lost his seat.

I would ask one question for balance

How much did foreign owned companies donate to political causes and were if there were donations tax deductible?

Could be fact. My opinion is based upon foreign influence in our electoral system.
A person or group that engages in such should face substantial and if an Org punitive penalties.

Define foreign

Ford for example has a Canadian division and Canadian interests yet is a foreign owned company, Should Ford Canada be allowed in your opinion to donate for political causes, when doing so is most likely the result of Ford's HQ policies?

Nope- Reason being Corps and Unions are prohibited from contributing to election campaigns. Only individuals can contribute

Party and Election Finance Laws
Private Funding

Canada’s federal election finance laws put limits on contributions to political parties and candidates. Only individuals — not corporations or trade unions — may donate. Contributions are limited to up to $1,500 a year to each political party and up to $1,500 to all of the registered electoral district associations, contestants seeking the party’s nomination and candidates for each party. In addition, donors may give up to $1,500 to leadership contestants for a party as well as up to $1,500 to independent candidates. These limits were set in 2015, and the amounts increase by $25 each year. Political actors must disclose the names of anyone who donates more than $200.

Prohibited from donating to candidates and parties, they can still do third party spending, that is my understanding.

With foreign monies?

We need that law here in the good old usa.

Yes you do. Corps/Unions/PACs/Special interests have corrupted your political system.

There can be do denying that. Both major parties owe their hearts and souls to corporations, wall street firms, lobbyist, special interest, mega, huge money donors. Neither major party will ever bite the hand that feeds it.

Citizens United 1.0 and 2.0 are republican inventions, won in front of a GOP USSC, with the 2.0 version argued by McConnell.

Democrats are currently raising millions for special elections at the grassroots level while GOPs bring in millions of dark dirty laundry .
