I just read an article the other week that Canadian French has an utterly unique way of swearing that has to do with the province's having been Catholic for so long.

Not sure on credibility of this, but I read long ago that Catholic towns (Quebec not being mentioned in particular), other than predominantly Protestant ones, would often have the local brothel usually in the vicinity of the same square (plaza, piazza, place etc.) where the church was located.

Whether the practicality of this was seen in it thus being just a short distance to confession (after visiting the établissement) or short distance to the établissement (after confession) was not dwelt upon.

Economically either way, for sure.;)
