Palin joins those balking at White House invite to rapper Common - Yahoo! News
I always find it interesting that the 'real'-America Palin represents.... you know... white middle class right wing protestant America... has absolutely no problem with people like Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Eazy-E, Kid Rock, Britney Spears, Jhonny Ramone etc being used by the GOP in some form or manner. However, the minute the White House invites what is considered to be one of the most socially conscious rappers in the industry to an event, then it's subject for criticism. It's because of things like this that it's good to be a leftist. You don't get bogged down in bull**** culture wars.
The Daily Caller set off the outrage with an article Monday about Common's scheduled appearance Wednesday at an "Evening of Poetry."
"Oh lovely, White House," the former Alaska governor tweeted with a link to Daily Caller's write-up. That story contrasted Common's widely circulated spoken word piece criticizing police, "Letter to the Law," to a poem written by 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson.
At issue are controversial and violent lyrics such as a reference to former president George W. Bush in "Letter to the Law:"
Burn a Bush cuz for peace he no push no but-ton. Killing over oil and grease, no weapons of destruc-tion.
Common, who performed the piece on Def Poetry Jam, also references being armed with an Uzi in battles with police.
