It's been three days now of no PlayStation Network, and it's really starting to look Anonymous did it. I used to support Anon, but now I don't. Next time I think they should pick targets that wont piss off a lot of their supporters.

I don't own a PlayStation, but who is Anonymous?

Really? It's still not back up? Damn good thing I don't really play much online on my PS3, Anonymous can suck it though.

This seems like pretty serious stuff, the network is still down and it's expected to be another week until it's working if I read correctly. It seems credit card info has also been compromised.

.........according to security researchers - and PlayStation Network users - the credit card information has indeed been taken, and is up for sale.....Supposedly the hackers selling the DB says it has: fname, lnam, address, zip, country, phone, email, password, dob, ccnum, CVV2, exp date.

If anonymous did it they wouldn't deny it. This looks like an attempt by criminals looking for financial gain, that's really not anon's style...and yes, the network is still out.

LOL - That's not Anon's style.

Anon is a group of stupid kids who like to annoy people. . . nothing's out of their range.

Almost bought PS3 just for the bluray player and to stream Netflix.

Everyone who has a PSN account, especially if you have a credit card attached to your account, should take all the necessary precautions to avoid having their identity stolen. Sony really ****ed up this time.

So glad we opted to wait on the PS3.

Most of them are /b/ tards.

Looks like my paranoia finally paid off. This is exactly why I use prepaid credit cards for online purchases. They may have my name and address, but 16important digits are important anyway.

What makes you think Anonymous did it? You can't just go around throwing out accusations.

Anonymous isn't a damn political party. If they did something notoriously stupid they would admit it AND boast about it. It wasn't them. Fact of life is that there are many hacker groups out there with many different agenda's.

I don't know much about any of this so i don't know who is responsible, but in general for hacker groups like anonymous I just want to know "Why?"

Yeah, I got an email from Sony giving a warning that credit card info may be compromised, and its almost certain that my PSN info has been compromised.

Excerpted from “PlayStation Network Users Reporting Credit Card Fraud” By Keir Thomas, PCWorld, Apr 30, 2011 8:17 AM
Sony PlayStation Network users are reporting fraud on their credit cards -- everything from a flight booked in Germany to purchases in Japanese grocery stores.

On Thursday, a security firm reported hackers are offering for sale what they claim are stolen PSN credit card details, despite the fact Sony is adamant that the data was encrypted and is therefore unusable. Sony also said there's "no evidence that credit card data was taken."

Meanwhile, Congress has gotten involved, with the House Committee on Energy and Commerce sending a list of questions to Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai (PDF link to the letter), and demanding answers by May 6. Additionally, the NextGov website claims the Homeland Security Department is helping Sony with its investigation. …

Just by causing the 77 million member Playstation Network to be shutdown for over a week and still counting makes this one of the biggest crimes of all time. There will be widespread consequences because of this.

I don't know much about any of this so i don't know who is responsible, but in general for hacker groups like anonymous I just want to know "Why?"

They usually have motives that make much more sense than the reasons given by other groups. For example they took down Visa and MasterCard for stopping donations to Wikileaks and then they took down Amazon for refusing to host it.

There are usually political considerations behind what Anonymous does but they try to maintain a balance between there actions and popular support, as was the case in defending Julian Assange. Taking down PSN which can only piss people off, STEALING financial data AND denying it? It just isn't their style.

For example, they have a history of attacking government sites introducing censorship legislation for the internet and have provided internet communication gateways that avoid government censorship in Arab Spring countries. They did it for the Iranian protests when Ahmadinejad was falsely elected.

But they made it clear they do not control every individual in Anonymous and will not take responsibility for any "extra-anon" activities that members may engage in.

Playstation has already admitted that Playstation themselves took the services down. If you read the email PSN sent out its clear the 3 major credit checkers getting TONS of traffic because of this. PSN is now working with "an unnamed security firm" more closely to get things handled. I want people with oversight to take a closer sniff to make sure an insider in Playstation isnt just selling credit info with some guy that hacked their website as their scapegoat. I wonder if sony is maybe making a fat insurance profit off all this?

I think corporations have plans in order so that when they get attacked by a hacker they make the problem look bigger than it really is as lay more blame on people that are hostile against them.

Maybe the goal here was a false flag attack to piss anon off so they really will start attacking sony harder? Someone bust out the scooby snacks and make sure a parking spot is open for the Mystery Machine. I smell a puzzle that needs a'solvin.

Anon was involved in a separate spate of attacks against Sony and Sony officials are complaining that they where so preoccupied guarding themselves from it, that it allowed these guys to launch a major assault with Sony not noticing until the last minute. Remember, they didn't just attack the PSN, they attacked SOE too which is a network for MMORPG games (that's another 22 million users).

Anon is denying it but Sony is claiming they found a file on their that said "Anonymous", probably just an attempt to frame them since it would be stupid to leave that behind and then deny it.

Sony took the network down out of their own will yes, this wasn't a DoS attack. They are going to investigate the damage and beef up security. I also heard that the hackers will target the Sony PS website in the coming days and post our details online.

I'm just disappointed in Sony and the hacker community. Sony should receive its just criticism for being idiotic in security measures. The latter's response seems to be a mix of disgust at the actual harm it has caused people or apologetic behavior for the actions of hackers. It is good to see some in the hacking community have some common decency.

That being said, I hope some in Anon realize they should grow up and see that just because they do not do these sort of things that another party did to Sony, that their actions are still not justified. I mostly think of Anon as a group of people who should have had their fathers discipline them more or had someone put them down a peg or two.

Sony has always said that they took down PSN and SoE online games. In fact, trying to log in gets you a message explaining just such with links for more information.

The security firms are not unnamed. They are Data Forte, Guidance Software and Protiviti. The last two may have been at the request/advice of Visa/Mastercard.

There is no way Sony is exaggerating this. Every day down is costing them millions.

Me and you understand this. But many still think it was anon that seiged the servers and brought them down. (maybe heading surfers are to blame?)

It the first email I got they where very broad and didnt mention the security firms. They just said "We brought the service down. We are working with a recognized security firm." (I was guessing Homeland Security) Maybe they where refering to the firms you mentioned and maybe not.

Hackers are bad. Fact of the matter is SONY cant keep their **** up.

Sony intentionally took the **** down to prevent further security breeches. This is completely different from "can't keep their **** up". SOE has been running online servers almost continually up since 1999.

The fact that some people are poorly informed about this is not Sony's fault. All the information is readily and easily available.
