OLYMPIA, Wash. – Drivers of electric cars may have left the gas pump behind, but there's one expense they may not be able to shake: paying to maintain the roads.
After years of urging residents to buy fuel-efficient cars and giving them tax breaks to do it, Washington state lawmakers are considering a measure to charge them a $100 annual fee — what would be the nation's first electric car fee.

Oxen & cart to avoid "paying to maintain the roads."

Annual Feed bill: $160.00
Annual maintenance bill of cart: $40

I don't see a problem with taxing drivers to maintain the roads, in fact I figured that's exactly how you'd want it to work? I mean you were complaining that young people shouldn't have to pay into SS because they will never use it, so why don't you say people who don't own a car shouldnt pay to maintain roads since they obvious use and will continue to use them?

Although I don't know why the state would only tax electric cars and not every car since they all put the same stress on the road, that seems a little weird.

People who drive gasoline (or diesel) cars pay to maintain the road with gas taxes. People who drive electric cars don't pay gas taxes, so they're not paying into the fund for maintaining the roads.

I have no problem with this. More and more places will start doing it over the years as electric vehicles take up a larger and larger share of the american car market.
 
Rather than tax the electric vehicle, what about using a "Watt tax" instead?
The revenue would then increase the more one drives.
