I agree with Governor Brewer and her reasons for this veto.

I believe we need a law that reguires all candidates meet the requirements in the Constitution or the whole Document is not worth a Damn.

This law should be Federal and carry swift and sure penalty for violations.

As a former City official I could have been challenged at any point to prove I was an established legal Citizen of the City for the required time before running as it should be.

PHOENIX -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill that would have required President Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names could appear on the state's ballot.

The bill would have made Arizona the first state to pass such a requirement. Opponents had warned the bill would give another black eye to Arizona after last year's controversy over the state's illegal immigration enforcement law.

Brewer said in her veto letter that she was troubled that the bill empowered Arizona's secretary of state to judge the qualifications of all candidates when they file to run for office.

I seem to have hit the wrong key and this needs to be moved. Sorry for that.

Or did it get vetoed for the fear that AZ, having a small number of electoral college votes, could be rendered insignificant?

She didn't like the wording. No need to read anything else into it.

that's not what she said, but thanks. by your measure, we can continue to think of her as a whack job.

The AZ legislature has enough votes to overturn her veto anyway..

I just can't fathom why ANYONE would not be ok with this law?

Tim-

A couple of reasons come to mind...

One, the state is already embroiled with legal entanglements with the fed. This kinda makes the state government look stupid.
Two, the birth certificate issue is a dead issue. Continuing to harp on it detracts from actual debate about things like a 14.5 trillion dollar debt that is about to increase to well over 15 trillion, unemployment still through the roof, out of control spending, ack of guidance on foreign affairs, illegal immigration, etc.

for starters...

That's what partisan hacks do. Wouldn't want to give the governor the credit she's due.
