Wearing a scarf does not indicate subservience to anyone. 90% of muslim women are not required to wear islamic clothes or scarf. It is only Saudis that have such stupid laws. Some do. Why object to that when you do not object to the half naked women serving your food in a restaurant?

Can anyone list an example of how we expect people to respect our culture? It seems to me, we respect other cultures far more than we respect anything that could be called American culture.

To what extent does "American culture" even exist? Can you define it?

I think what tpd is referring to is that we expect immigrants and foreigners to comply with our laws, and sometimes our norms and customs.

My point was that we don't have the same respect for culture in this country because we have such a nebulous culture ourselves. We see a woman who has to dress a certain way by law and we want to change that because we've got such different ideals in that regard. It doesn't make any sense to get all riled up over something like this. If it would help relations in Afghanistan, I'm all for it. It doesn't mean we've given in to the Taliban, it means we've taken the time to becoome educated in another culture and it shows respect. I don't see a problem with that.

What "war" are you talking about, pal? There is no war, war is when two armies fight against each other. We are simply executing people we do not like. Just like our "allies" in that enclave we support with five million bucks a day, so that they can have free medical care we do not have!
