$101,091: Annual Compensation for Average Milwaukee Teacher

The way that you are posting this "information" (which, btw, you have not presented except to quote salaries and scream) demonstrates that you cannot teach, Noodle. Here's an example of Noodle's teaching style:

Noodle: OK, kids, we are going to discuss how teachers are overpaid.
Student: But Mr. Noodle, aren't teachers important?
Noodle: NO!!! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. TEACHERS DO NOTHING.
Student: But Mr. Noodle, doesn't that mean that you aren't really doing anything?
Noodle: THAT'S RIGHT!!! AND I DESERVE FAR LESS COMPENSATION FOR THE LITTLE THAT I AM DOING, TOO.
Student: Ok, Mr. Noodle, can you explain why you have this job?
Noodle: TO PROVE HOW INCOMPETANT TEACHERS ARE AND HOW ANYONE CAN DO THEIR JOB.
Student: Are you saying that you are incompentant?
Noodle: GET OUT OF MY CLASSROOM YOU LITTLE ****!!! HOW DARE YOU CONFRONT ME ON LOGIC. IN FACT, ALL OF YOU GET OUT!!!
Student: But Mr. Noodle... what about the rest of class?
Noodle: SHUT UP!!! I'M NOT LISTENING. LALALALALALA.

Principal: Ummm... Mr Noodle... why did you send your entire class to my office?
Noodle: They DARED to disagree with me and confront me on logic.
Principal: Ummm... students will do that at times. You might want to figure out how to encourage them to explore different ideas.
Noodle: IF THEIR IDEAS ARE NOT MINE, THEIR IDEAS ARE WRONG!!!

No Noodle, I don't think you could teach.

I see you put a lot of time and effort into that. Although it isnt very accurate I will give you a B- :2razz:

So, I have a question. When you are talking to people, do you shout random words the same way you put words in caps? If so, I want a video.

This rant here reminds me of a scenario played out quite a few times in various cartoons, movies, shows.

Husband is sitting at the dinner table telling his wife how she's got it SOOO easy and that he wished that he had her job. Just sit around the house all day, watching soap operas or reading Cosmo. So wife challenges him to a bet. She will do his chores and he has to do her chores for one week. One the very first day the husband gets a list of things that the woman does. He says "piece of cake!" By the end of the day the guy is practically crying. lol

Moral of the story....Don't say something is easy until YOU have done it.

You would be right, if only you werent wrong  (old Klingon proverb)

They told ME these things. Now bring me a frackin' apple!

Proves that you would be a crummy teacher. Definitely A+ material. :2razz:

Sounds like they are piss poor teachers who aren't really doing their jobs. So maybe you could do that job and be a piss poor teacher without training.

Did you miss that part that they get paid around $60 an hour w/ benefits????
Did you miss the part where even the Mayor of Chicago.... the man that cares VERY much about education for kids..... knows and said they work only 6 hours a day??? If not then here: U.S. a "Country of Whiners," Daley Whines - Chicagoist

And I agree 100% with Daley! Teachers / State Unions are whinners!
is daley a teacher? no? i doubt he understands or knows what a teachers average day is.

This thread should be renamed "The Giant Noodle Show".

If there are other qualified people willing to do the job for less, why would you pay more than you have to? The money saved could be used to hire MORE teachers.

To encourage better people to want to teach. That's also a component of supply and demand.

A. Having high compensation for teachers and demanding high standards from them
B. Having high compensation for teachers while saying that we should demand high standards from them
C. Having high compensation for teachers while allowing mediocrity

A & B are not at all the same. B & C are essentially identical in terms of the economics of teacher compensation. There is absolutely no reason to pay such high wages for these positions as long as they require virtually nothing of the employee. If eventually we get to a place where our teachers have merit-based compensation and we need to recruit more qualified teachers...maybe THEN I'll support high wages for them. But we're years away from that happening.

OK. You don't support high wages. I get that. I do. I am all for merit pay and getting rid of bad teachers. I see no reason to cut salaries, in the meantime, while this is being worked out. That would then dissuade good candidates from teaching and enourage good teachers from staying.

You stole my line!

You snooze, you lose.

From now on, for the rest of this thread, I decree that all responses to Noodle shall be in all CAPS.

Its a misnomer to believe we all are not teachers at some level. Take my job as an example, I am currently mentoring 4 people to replace replace me at some point in the future. I spend time with each of the four on a weekly basis to mold and guide them to what it is I actually do. In other words I TEACH them. My boss does the same with me, should he leave the company, it will be a seamless transition into his role. In other words he is TEACHING me.

Do I get compensated any more to do this? no. Does my boss get compensated any more to mold and direct me? no. We just do it. To claim the Noodle can't teach is simply a misrepresentation of the facts. We all teach...some just get paid for it and are called 'teachers'. I can assure you that without any training at all, I could walk into any of America's classrooms and impart my knowledge. Furthermore, I could also walk into any classroom in America, and if given a lesson plan and 2 hours to prepare, teach any subject currently being taught at the high school level. Any of us who care about our jobs, and the direction of our companies are already teachers...just at a different level.

Teaching a group requires a different skillset over teaching one on one.

As with Noodle, I would dare you try give it a try before making such claims.

The skillset required to be a teacher over time is different than the skillset require to teach someone something.

The $59K is not the shocking part. To me that seems a bit more than what teachers are worth, but I'm not going to make a big fuss about it. The real shocking number is the $42K in benefits every year. That is absurd.

I would like to see the benefits amount explained. If I had that amount in benefits given to me in cash, I could certainly come up with a good medical plan and a great retirement plan and have some left over...

And that's a shame. I look at monetary compensation as a refection on the importance to society... and I see certain areas of public service, professions that are an intregal part of holding together the fabric of society as being the most important. Those that should be compensated the most would include those in the military, teachers, the police, firefighters, and physicians.

and minimum wage for elected officials.....

I agree. I've been trying to research it, but have been busy with other things while I'm posting.
