Just like Reagan did; break, break, break the public unions. do not let them get away with this crap.

Three union workers who called out sick to attend a labor rally at the New Jersey Statehouse last week have been suspended.

The move comes a day after Gov. Christie told NBC New York in an interview that "people who call in sick better be sick." Christie issued his warning ahead of another labor rally that drew thousands on Thursday...

The county said the workers were among 14 in the department who called out sick; officials alleged that 174 developmentally disabled adults who depend on the county's services ended up "waiting for buses that never came."

"These employees are being suspended without pay based on the fact that we have evidence to prove that they were not home sick as they had claimed," said Lillian Burry, a county official.

The union representing the workers, the Communications Workers of America(CWA) put out a statement through its District One calling this a "politically-motivated attack on public workers who perform vital services."..

State Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth), who first complained of a "sick-out," applauded officials for the suspension, noting some workers were "caught on camera" at last week's rally. He wants officials to keep reviewing video to see "if others were absent without proper excuse."..

Yeah!!!!! Get big government out of our lives. Right. Of course now Jabba the Guv is going to want to see your stool sample if you claim to have been ill. Jabba the Guv wants to be our mommy. Cute.

It's not like they demanded evidence from the workers that they were home sick. They had PROOF that they attended this rally.

I find it interesting that the union was so quick to jump to their defense, as though playing hooky from work under the pretense of being sick is an inalienable right. This mindset is exactly the problem with public sector unions and why we should get rid of them.

If they wanted to not work and attend the rally, they need to have either taken a personal day, or state that they were not coming in for personal reasons. As far as I know, that is completely acceptable. I may not like Christie, but I support this action.

:fueltofir Whatever is causing Republicans to piss away their political capital on quixotic assaults against public employees, I'm just happy to be here watching.

Actually, this kind of stuff is what's going to get him re-elected.

Okay, dude. Whatever you say. While he's at it, why not make it a landslide and kick some old ladies down stairs? :2razz:

Yeah, I'm sure the public is going to be staunchly opposed to suspending public employees who skip out on their duties for personal reasons, and bill the taxpayers anyway. Perhaps you could clarify why you think that the public should foot the bill for their absenteeism?

Well, NJ is pretty liberal, I'm not so sure. He barely won last time and that's mainly because he was up against a Democrat who was a complete failure.

Not comparable behaviors. They lied and were punished for it. Christie did nothing wrong here.

Most people have taken sick days when they aren't sick, and usually not for anything as noble and justifiable as a union rally. It just makes Christie look like a bellicose thug badgering people who work for a living because he thinks he can get away with it.

Christie did nothing wrong here.

He acted within his authority (as far as I know). That's not the same as "did nothing wrong."

You mean like the politically-motivated action of calling in sick to attend a political rally, instead of showing up for work to perform these vital services?

You can't make this stuff up.

Difference is, they didn't get caught. They shouldn't be doing that, just because it isn't always enforced doesn't mean it's right.

It's exactly the same. Acting within your authority as gov. and obeying the law is doing nothing wrong.

... Some of you don't see a problem with lying to your employer about being sick, then skipping work to attend a political rally? Really?

especially when the rally is about pushing against your employer? this is like demanding to get paid to go on strike.

If you're too sick to go to work, then you're too sick to attend politico-paloosa. It's just like any other job. If you play hooky from work, you might find your job in jeopardy.

A few years ago at an old job of mine we had an employee that called in sick. Later on in the day her boss was driving home and had to go through a road construction site in order to get home. As she was going by the person that holds the stop/slow sign she sees the employee that called in sick that very same day. Next day that employee was fired.

Do you believe that the boss was in the rights? Or was the employee unfairly fired?

Noble? Really? Noble....

You know what is funny, in the federal government .. the libbys are bashing the Republicans because they haven't tackled the big items, like SS and Medicare. So they say that republicans really aren't serious about cuts … mean while they say nothing of 4 years of Democratic control, that not only didn't offer a single cut in spending, but increase spending by some gawd awful percent.

One the state level, where the Governors are tackling the “big” items in their budget deficit ….. the libbys are right back at bashing Republicans ….bashing Republicans that just like they say Obama has done, in many cases when they were elected “inherited” their problems from democrats …..

They support and defend the stimulus, they support and defend the national debt now that Obama is running it up, they support and defend the war in Afghanistan... now that Obama is running it, they now support and defend keeping Gitmo open and running as usual, they now support and defend the Obama tax cuts for the rich, extended for 2 years the list is endless........of support and defend the very same polices that they bashed Bush for

They have every Republican already being beaten in 4 years, because their polls are down, because they are trying to fix the problem they “inherited” from years of Democratic run states. (in many cases) But when it's pointed out how “their” loved leader's numbers are down, they tell you how we must wait and see that 2 more years things can change …

What is clear is that we are dealing with bunch of hypocrites

How anyone in their right mind could possibly defend someone who lies to their employer so that they can get paid for a sick day when they are not sick, is beyond me.

It is in my mind the equivalent of stealing.

The only slightly sane reason I can see to defend such persons is if you have some personal stake in having such actions be allowed, in which case you are little better than said persons, and I pity your failings and misguided behavior.

The idea that a grown adult must justify time taken from the job because they have runny poop or a fever is something akin to childhood. Of course, that is exactly the type of relationship the right wing wants for workers and employers. They cannot bring back slavery or serfdom so paternalism is the next best thing.

More progressive employers have rejected the medieval "sick day" concept in favor of simply time away from work based on a contractual reward for time served on the job or a matter of an agreed upon contract clause.
