AOL to buy online Huffington Post for $315M

AOL's stock has dropped almost 20 percent in the last 10 days.

LOL

Given that this announcement was made less than 10 days ago, this points to another cause.

Good investors always find out stuff ahead of time. The cat was out of the bag.

Good point, I didn't think about that.

according to the article, the huffington post is 'one of the top 10 current events and global news sites'....could be a good move for aol

With AOL buying them, it's the one sure way to kill off HuffPo quickly.

HuffPo - we hardly knew ye.

I would have thought that all the right wingers here would have been overjoyed that a few new multi-millionaires were created yesterday.

I really don't care about other folks personal finances. It's their business. This though was a business move with a public company, and I... and am sure many others looked at it through these lenses. In short, how did AOL fare in the deal, and will they make money on their investment? I can think of dozens of better purchases for $315 million.

It was a bad and dumb move on many fronts. Perhaps at a discount, but at 300% above FMV! Oy vey!

I was thinking about how bad this deal is... it's right down there with New Coke.

Traffic is down. The integration is likely destroying the huffington post. The sales demands and content over-reach are destroying huffpost’s focus while the org is trapped trying to save AOL when the huffpost team should be focused on building huffpost. Traffic on huffpost is up – but only due to the redirects from aol sites…. Net net, aol plus huff post traffic is in decline and the situation is not improving.

I could never figure this one out from the AOL side. Huff Post always seemed to me as a third-rate wanna be player, and appealed to the Left. You can polarize, that's fine, but first you need a strong draw, and Frau Huff ain't it, not over the long haul. She's a liability. For Frau Huff, it was easy. Take the cash and run, as you'll only find such stupidity, massively overpaying for a 3rd-rate site once in a lifetime.

By comparison Drudge, though named after Matt Drudge is almost faceless, enjoys and has built off of the first-to-market advantage that came with breaking the Clinton Scandal Newsweek sought to bury.

AOL would be better off stripping the site and imitating the clear, clean simplicity of Drudge's home page wit a twist; add a separate stories of the day comments page for the . Huff Post looks like the typical dog's breakfast.
