EPA shuts down one of the largest Coal Mines in U.S.

The BP spill proved that deepwater drilling is not safe.

That is why regulations are in place - they are enacted BECAUSE of problems and their purpose is to PREVENT future problems. When regulations are ignored and people stop taking their jobs and the issues seriously THEN things go to ****.

What the investigation into the matter found is that no one was making any effort *what so effort* to prevent and avoid problems. Documents were faked. Individuals did their own audits and reviews of their own work and the people who *were* suppose to do them just went with whatever was written.

The BP oil spill rooted out the horrible inefficiency and 'WE don't give a ****' attitude from most parts of the oil industry.

And some people believe drilling should have continued as if nothing had happened.

Well that's not the case for this particular issue, here.

If the government had properly done it's job with the oil industry all this time many disasters would have been prevented, avoided, or the impact reduced.

It was a great idea when the republicans came out with it. Now that democrats finally agree, it becomes a bad idea.

In case you hadn't noticed the election in 2010 was not a pep rally for Republicans. They made lots of mistakes and had wrong headed ideas in the past. It's a new day. Let's wait and see what they do now. So far they seem to be keeping their promises and are listening to the people.
I don't care if they used to be for cap and trade. I care that they better be absolutely against it now.

Not related to this, you're just trying to use any opportunity to bash Pelosi. There are plenty of threads about that exact thing.

Jobs lost, unemployment checks, Nancy Pelosi comments about the benefits of unemployment. Seems related to me.
You can still point me to the plenty of threads my comments would better fit though.

Notice, "could have" Maybe, might have. And the $.55 a ton, where did that figure come from? It's a rosy projection but there is a lot more to the story then you think. But if you want to stick with the "cheap ass greedy company couldn't spare $.55 they deserved it". be our guests. Real families are suffering now, think about that.

Why do some people believe it is OK for companies to pollute the environment to save 1%? And then they blame environmentalists. Without them we would not be able to drink the water or breathe the air.

They should revoke the mining rights and transfer them to a more responsible company.

I don't think anyone said that polluting the environment is ok. My question is: how is doing nothing, other than putting people out of work, a solution?

You think the owners of that mining company are hurt by this? So, they'll only make $5 million this year, instead of $10 million. Those miners are going make zilch. That's showin'em!!!

Sounds like the company could remedy the problem easily with minimal cost. 1 percent.

If The Messiah was all about saving jobs--as he claims--he would use government money to remedy the problem.

Now, this is exactly the kind of backwards, two-faced Conservative mentality that grates on me. On the one hand, apdst complains about a private company being shut down by the government for not implementing proper environment safeguards, but on the other hand he advocates that the very same government pay the cost for correcting the problems of this private company all the while complaining that the government spends too much of the taxpayers money while also championing the need for people and private entities to "take responsibility for themselves".

You're such a hypocrite and a foolish one at that.

Let's get to the real issue here, shall we?

The mining company, Arch Coal Inc., was informed they had environmental safety problems for atleast a year. The EPA offerred cost effective solutions, but the mining company refused. As such, the EPA shut them down out of the greater concern for the health and safety of the population center that would have been adversely affected by environmental waste being dumped into rivers and streams that pollute safe drinking water. The irony here as with all environmental and safety issues is that had the EPA not taking such a strong stance and shut this facilty down AFTER giving them ample opportunity to correct the problem, the public would have cried foul against the federal government (EPA) for not acting sooner to protect the public.

So, my position here is why doesn't Arch Coal Inc. just pay the $.55/per ton - the estimated $5 million dollars it would take - to correct the problem and remain in operation, thus, keeping (reportedly 250) people employed? This is capitalism at it's worse! Arch Coal Inc would rather save an estimated $5 million dollars now and run the risk of potentially losing a class-action lawsuit later which could potentially cost them a much higher pay-out in fines, penalties and settlement fees. Very smart...NOT!!! Just ask companies like PG&E out of California how knowing polluting public drinking water turned out for them. Or how about BP recently (even though that was an accident, they and their associates knew the risks as they were drilling).

Look, I'm all for a private business or private citizen making a few bucks, but never at the cost of the safety and well-being of its employees nor the community which they serve. To blame the EPA/Obama administration for being responsible is foolish. If Arch Coal Inc acted just as responsible, this issue would have been resolved long ago.

A government is no better than the people it represents. So let's hear your ideas.

I got an idea. Let's go after leftist environmentalism and thoroughly discredit it. Then we drill and dig and conserve and build and develop and bring new oil, coal, nuclear, renewable, alternative energy sources on line like the Chinese are doing.

The BP oil spill went a long way in discrediting environmentalism.
You know, the republicans had 6 years of total control to implement an energy plan. The only thing they did was insure profits rose to record levels.
So you want our energy sector put under government control like the Chinese? You really are a socialist, aren't you?

I am neither a socialist nor a snot nosed undergraduate.

Brilliant!

If you want our energy sector to be run like the Chinese you are a socialist. A socialist market economy is still socialism. You are a commie and you didn't even know it. You would fit right in in China.
I graduated from college in '77. My nose stopped running in '78.

Thanks for the analysis, and the chat.

Yeah, **** it, I don't mind having coal runoff in my drinking water! It only contains about 400 hazardous substances. Screw you, EPA!

55 cents.
Per ****ing ton.

You people make me sick.

Me too. Blaming it on the EPA is beyond rediculous.

They whine about families suffering. How about people who get all sorts of horrible illnesses from this crap? Do they not realize what these substances do to people?

No, they just care about the 'job-killing' (myth) health care bill. No the people-killing chemicals.

Never heard them complaining about all those jobs lost to China either.

Ah, yes... the limited vision of the far-right.

It doesn't make sense to create jobs in America because of, inter alia, environmental constraints. The class of Americans who create jobs has no incentive to do so in America. No amount of cajoling or shame will change that fact.
