According to a USA Today/Gallup poll, the most admired man is Barack Obama, and the most admired woman is Hillary Clinton.

Obama Named Most Admired Man For Third Straight Year


Survey takers were asked: "What man that you have heard or read about, living today in any part of the world, do you admire most?" Obama was named on 22 percent of ballots, well ahead of former presidents George W. Bush, who was second at 5 percent, and Bill Clinton at 4 percent.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the most admired woman, garnering 17 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin was next with 12 percent, followed by Oprah Winfrey with 11 percent.

Ugh. I can't stand Hillary Clinton. I like Michelle Obama, though. However, she would hardly qualify for my most admired list. I'd say that women like Asieh Amini and Shadi Sadr should be on the list, though.

I don't consider being married to someone a qualification for admiration...you actually have to DO SOMETHING for me to admire you.

No doubt name recognition has something to do with it, yet celebrities generally enjoy more name recognition than do politicians. Have you ever watched Jay Leno show people on the street pictures of Joe Biden or perhaps Nancy Pelosi, and ask them who it was? After their absurd guesses, he'll ask them who won on "Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars", and they'll know right away.

i Guess that depends on the beholder.. Obama didn't have to do jack ****, and he snagged Nobel Peace Prize :ninja:
 
i guess the word admire isnt as strong as respect or who you think is most important so i guess you have to let it slide.

I think it's very uplifting that during a period of high unemployment and national uncertainty, the two most admired persons in the country are the currently serving President and Secretary of State. Personally, I think the confidence and trust the American people feel for these two popular leaders reflects very positively on our ability to recover from the economic calamity of the past few years and to build upon the legacy of freedom and civil rights for all people going forward.
 
From 1981 through 1988, the most admired man was Ronald Reagan.
From 1988 through 1992, the most admired man was George H. W. Bush.
From 1993 through 2000, the most admired man was Bill Clinton.
From 2001 through 2007, the most admired man was George W. Bush.
From 2008 through 2010, the most admired man was Barack Obama.

For some reason, I don't think this survey really reflects "the confidence and trust the American people feel" so much as "durr hurr that guy's the president!"

And let's not forget, in 1996 Billy bob was impeached for lying under oath. And he was still admired. Don't say much for ol' Bobo, does it?

I SEE why people would like Obama.
But I'm stumped on Hillary? What has she done that's worth noting - not necesserily in her life - but in the last few YEARS?

Other than running against Obama and losing - she's done jack **** for the country . . . I remember quite clearly her NOT being present to do her job more than once.

I guess it's the whole 'which suit' thing people still adore?

Because of the nature of open-ended questions like this, it really doesn't matter whether a person has "done things" for the country so much as it matters whether they're well-known among a small segment of the population. Look at the breakdown of the numbers. The highest she (or anyone) received in the past six years was 20%. The only people to break 10% during that period were Hillary, Palin, Oprah, and Condi. If you look at the "most admired women" historically, it's a list of prominent first ladies with the occasional Mother Teresa or Margaret Thacher thrown in. Given that Hillary was probably the most well-known female political figure since 1993, I don't think it's really that surprising.
