They don't understand the nature of the different types of ballistic missiles, the difference between theater defense and national defense, and the difference in intercept phases.

I don't understand much of that stuff either, but I know that the defense systems do not work.

Theater ballistic missile defenses appear to work. That's because they catch the missile during it's vulnerable lift phase...SM-3.
The PAC-3 system seems to work against IRBMs. I don't know about THAAD.

Anyone who thinks they are posting current info on what our missile defense capabilities currently are is deluded or about to go to prison.

The Russians aren’t worried about us shooting down a scud or a Taepodong-2, they are worried that we could build a system sophisticated enough to shoot down enough of their missiles that it would unhinge the MAD philosophy and give the USA first strike capabilities.

That’s why communists, socialists and liberals oppose US missile defense.

By the way, it’s pretty lame to argue that we shouldn’t develop/perfect a system simply because it isn’t perfect in the early stages.

MAD becomes less and less effective as more and more states and groups acquire nuclear weapons technology. Besides, the Twelver Sect of Shiism in Iran doesn't believe in anything other than the Return of the Twelfth Imam, viz., the Mahdi. MAD doesn't work against those on a mission from gawd. The only thing America can do is to make itself a very small target, and hope for the best on missile defenses.

Also I think there are fewer countries with viable nukes than I have digits.

The DPRK has nothing to sell to the world except weapons, dope and women. They sold a nuclear plant like the old one at Yongban to the Syrians. They will sell nuke and missile technology to those who can pay. NK is believed to be selling the plans to the Burmese.

When Iran goes nuclear, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey will begin nuclear weapons programs. Venezuela may think they must go nuke to defend against America. When Iran becomes a nuclear weapons state it will have done so under the cover of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Thus, when Iran gains that status, the NPT dies because it will have shown all states with nuclear weapons aspirations how to achieve the objective without getting into serious trouble.

America will be forced to withdraw from East Asia and the Western Pacific as Chinese power grows. That being the case, the only way for Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam to maintain their sovereignty is if they go nuclear. Otherwise they will end up with a relationship with China like Canada has with America.
