9/11 First responders speak out on 'Daily Show'

You are wrong. The dollar figures have changed and so has the funding source among other things.

The reality is a simple one: the Republicans are holding this bill up now, today, in the present. The Democrats, including the President, are in support of it. That is the reality no matter how much you want to play 'gotcha' or justify some political angle.

But those are just dull, dry old facts. Playing "gotcha" and spinning events for some kind of political point, then leaping and hooting about how great you are is much more fun.

The previous article was from nearly one year ago. Changes have been made in that year. But I could not care less about a bunch of knee-jerk Obama haters trying to play 'gotcha' with this issue. I do not care if he changed his position 1,000 times regardless of the facts. Got that?

All I care about is the bill before the Congress today that is supported by the President and Democrats but is being stopped by Republicans. That trumps everything. I don't give a sack of garden manure about anything but getting this bill passed to help these true American heroes in their need.

Duly noted. I'm sure you will NEVER criticize a Republican for flip flopping their position EVER, right ??

When I do you now have a 'get out of jail FREE' card.

The major changes in the bill were made this week, long after Obama flip flopped.

The January news article uses a cost figure of over 10 billion.
The bill stopped last week was over 9 billion.
You do not call that a significant change? A billion dollars is a lot of money. And I would strongly suspect a careful reading of the bill that existed in January and the bill before Congress last Thursday had other changes as well.

But as I have said - it matters not to me about this entire silly 'flip' issue. All that matters to me is getting a bill passed to help these American heroes who need it.

not as significant as the actual change...

Tentative Deal Reached on 9/11 Health Bill - WSJ.com
Republican and Democratic senators struck a tentative deal to approve an aid bill for Ground Zero workers after New York lawmakers agreed to scale back its cost and accept other conditions, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Republican and Democratic senators struck a tentative deal to approve an aid bill for Ground Zero workers. Above, construction continues at Ground Zero Dec. 9.
.Lawmakers for both parties met late into Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning to work on the details of the revised $4.3 billion package, a reduction from the original $7.2 billion legislation.

The bill would provide five years of health-care coverage and re-open a compensation program for those who became ill after working on the toxic debris pile or living and working nearby.

The final language is still being crafted, but a vote by unanimous consent could come Wednesday afternoon.

Sounds like a fair compromise to me. Allah forbid we get Dems and Republicans to compromise, instead of just accepting whatever the Dems want... right?

This is waht some people in here have been whining like little girls about...

Exclusive: Senate Strikes Deal on 9/11 Bill - ABC News
"I'll stand in the way of anything that doesn't make sense and doesn't spend our money wisely, so you know, it doesn't matter what the issue is, we're in such a hole, Jon, that we don't have the luxury of not getting things right," Coburn told ABC News' Jonathan Karl. "And so we've come to an agreement that costs less, doesn't allow double-dipping, doesn't allow exorbitant lawyer fees, and we've worked it out and so we're going to take care of the folks, but we're going to do it in a way that doesn't punish the people that are going to pay the bill."

"But the way you've been hammered on this, standing against the heroes of 9/11…," replied Karl.

"I'm used to being hammered," Coburn said. "I'm not standing against them at all. I'm standing for us as America, the realization that we have to do things efficiently and economically. We've worked out a deal now that spends a whole lot less money, accomplishes exactly the same thing, and does it in a way that protects our future. Every bill should have to go through that – and the fact that they don't is a problem. That's why we're $14 trillion in debt."

"So I don't mind taking the heat," he continued. "You know, as a physician I care about those people. As a citizen, I care about the firefighters of my own city and every other city. The fact is you can still do it right. So you take all the heat, but you still it get done. So what we need is more people taking more heat so we get the right things done."

"Everybody's come to an agreement. We've got a handshake. We're waiting for the paperwork. And it'll be a done deal by the end of the day. But had we not done that, we wouldn't have had it and they wouldn't have had it until next year. So the fact is we accomplished their goals and we accomplished protecting the future of the country."

The Senate just passed the revised bill... unanimously.

This... is what bi-partisan cooperation is supposed to look like people.

The 9/11 responders would have been helped months ago if the Dems had conducted open meetings and worked with Republicans on this bill, rather than trying to ram it through with no discussion.

Damn shame it took them until the end of the term to figure out how to actually compromise and be bi-partisan.

Nonsense. Republicans held up the bill for their own political purposes. The last holdout was Coburn.

They held it up to get the concessions from the Democrats that they ended up with. That's the way the system works. Don't like it? Run for office, get elected and change the system, or vote someone in who will change it for you.

Nonsense. Dems thought they could ram it down the Republican's throats. November showed them they had better learn to compromise or 2012 would result in even more of them without jobs.

Yes, it is. The bill passed, $5 B + saved, and all it took was for Jon Stewart to hold the process up to the light of day and point out the absurdity of it.

Maybe if we get a Republican Congress along with a Democrat WH, we can once again balance the budget as the two parties make sure the other doesn't break the bank.

You're giving Stewart the credit for the GOP holding the Dems feet to the fire until they compromised? Really?

I'm giving Stewart credit for having brought the issue to the attention of the public and motivated the sides to actually do more than spout nonsnese and sling crap at the other party.

Nonsense. Dems thought they could ram it down the Republican's throats.

and rammed it was..... 7 1/4 .... 4 1/3 its still rammed down the throat of those who balked and originally said NO NO NO. They still don't like it and didn't want it.

Perhaps you're right. Maybe Stewart shamed the Dems into actually discussing it with the Republicans and working out a compromise.

You got that backwards there champ. The Dems were already on board well before Stewart got involved. But nice try anyways to save some little face for your party.

Yeah, that's why an overwhelming majority of Republicans voted for it.

And it was originally over 11 billion and full of waste and fraud potential. Dems were giving their friends (lawyers) a huge payday.

Now it's a sensible deal.

Really? How much did the cost drop after Stewart and discussions with Republicans ???

Your attempt at spin won't work anymore.

Your attempt at revisionist histroy is pathetic. The Dems were only on board for 'their' version of the bill... fraught with waste, lawyer kickbacks, etc. The GOP brought it to a screeching halt, until the Dems finally caved in and gave up their fiscally irresponsible version for a more 'fair and balanced' approach.

Like it or not, the GOP was right from day one on this. Of course, you don't give a **** that the GOP got the same benefits to those who need them, with lest cost, and lest waste. All you give a **** about is spewing how evil the GOP is. You're a one trick pony Hay... and your trick is boring.

In the end, everyone won. The first responders get the health care they deserve. The taxpayers saved a ton of money. The Democrats got to lambaste the Republicans for having opposed the bill. The Republicans got to lambaste the Democrats for an overly expensive proposal. Both the Republicans and Democrats can now leap and hoot and tell everyone that it was their party that achieved the best solution. Jon Stewart got a great show and a boost to his career. His advertisers got a big audience to hawk their wares to. Everyone won, no one lost. Partisans on both sides can now point to the greatness of their party.

Bipartisanship at its finest.

You have shown none of those things in the bill. You simply are a water carrying toadie for the GOP acting as their public relations man on this site. A drastic reduction does not yield the "same benefits" no matter what partisan spin you attempt to put on it.

The Republicans tried to kill this bill and it was only extraordinary efforts to show them to be the self centered Scrooges that they are that propelled them to finally support the effort. Jon Stewart played one of the Dicken's spirits and scared them into support simply not to continue with the Scrooge routine which was damaging their rep.
