Palin's reckless views on obesity

Well, ok, so how do I say he is a hypocrite in this kind of thread and not break the rules? Can I just not point it out? If that is so, can I point out that Roland Martin is a hypocrite? .

Good start.

Yeah but you cannot expect for a rich(financially) father to be supporting all of John Doe's basterd children because he has the inability of keeping his penis in his pants. We are all responsible for our actions and we benefit greatly when we interact with one another. But not when one side is trying to screw the other.

That's an overgeneralization. The thought that the rich should support ALL the poor is just as absurd as suggesting that each of us has ZERO responsibility to our the society in which we live.

OOooooooooooooooK mister GLOBAL moderator.

"And I know I'm going to be again criticized for bringing this up, but instead of a government thinking that they need to take over and make decisions for us according to some politician or politician's wife priorities, just leave us alone, get off our back and allow us as individuals to exercise our own God-given rights to make our own decisions and then our country gets back on the right track."

She's talking about liberty. There's nothing stupid about that.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand all the talk about lost liberty or "government taking over and making decisions for us" as Palin put it. AFAICT, this initiative is set up in a way that allows the government to educate instead of dictate, and IMO that's exactly the kind of role the government should be playing in social issues like this. I only know of two requirements in this initiative that would remotely resemble lost liberties for citizens or businesses:

- $1 billion/yr tax increase to help provide more nutritious school lunches.
- Require nutrition information to be easily readable on the front of the package.

Again, maybe I'm missing something.

When people have demonstrated a pattern of making bad decisions, trusting them to make the right decisions for our future is irrational and dangerous. If we were making the right decisions for our children in the face of the obesity epidemic, there wouldn't be any obesity epidemic for us to worry about.

Getting this country back on track means getting people to behave correctly. If force is the only way the government can accomplish this, so be it.

That's the wrong answer.

She is talking about a bumper sticker cliche.
and that is stupid.

I completely agree with this. Sarah Palin is right. She's also right that she would be criticized for it. :)

Anybody old enough to tell me if President Kennedy's physical fitness standards were also viewed as government sticking it's nose where it doesn't belong?

It's not your business or the government's business what people eat. What in the consitution gives them the right to make such decisions for us?
Sorry, but I think the people have had about as much "force" from this administration that they are going to take. In 2012 the tables are going to turn and we'll get back on the track of individual freedom and liberty.
I really hope you're joking about the government "getting people to behave correctly" What country is Wyoming in, anyway? I thought it was in the greatest country in the world, but maybe not.

I tend to agree with this, and I find it hilarious. I say the more overload the better.

Then you're in for a real treat for the next 2 yrs and beyond. :)
She ain't going anywhere any time soon.

I do not remember any big conservative outburst when JFK did that.

At least Palin's aware of the situation: parents are continually proving their selves incapable of properly parenting their children.

And should that be the governments business?
How about we put it in the hands of family members, the community or their churches.
If their parenting skills are that bad, the children will be removed by Children's services.
Our government is too large as it is. They can stay out of the kitchen and our school cafeterias.
Next, they'll be telling you how you must raise your dog. Heaven forbid if he's fat.

Then what do you propose we do about the fact that it's predicted that the majority of Americans will have diabetes by 2020? What do we do about the fact that the majority of us are not in fit enough shape to fight? "Nothing" is not a good enough answer.

Get out there and educate people. That doesn't mean they will listen, but it's not your job to dictate what goes in their mouths or how many miles they walk each day.
Also, show by example. That's the best way to educate people.

That's what the First Lady is doing.

It's reckless to suggest that people watch what they eat?

Give the government a inch and it will take a foot, actually it has already done that time and time again. Time to limit the government and put it back in it's box. What I or my family eats is no ones business especially the governments. So let it keep pushing and we will start to push back.

I find it awkward when people say the government has no place in raising kids. The very thesis behind properly running a government would support the very opposite opinion. The government has a vested interest in raising kids to not be complete ****-ups like Bristol. I mean, at the very least - she can always depend on the money mommy gets. The majority of teen moms don't really have such a family safety net to fall on.

At least we now know that Chris Christie will be on the short list as her VP running mate in 2012. ;)

Too fuuny, you should make a lotta money.

BTW, Chris Christie is not running for anything in 2012. He likes his job and he's amazing at it.

I picture , maybe a Palin/Pence ticket or a Palin/Pawlenty. I hope it's not Palin/Perry, but you never know.

Why thank you maam. If you look at your other tickets, they are all a PP ticket. Grade school kids will love it. ;)

You can show where the Let's Move campaign is taking over and making decisions for parents?

Its impossible for stupid people to stop. No amount of asking would work.

On a more serious note: I cannot remember the last time I had not seen a President or his wife do something to try and reduce obesity. Whether it was Bush running so that other American's would pick up on exercising or Clinton making jokes about going to the Doctor and reading his results to the public, etc. This is not a beginning of something new, it is something that has been repeated by every administration since I can remember. Which includes three leaders. So really it isn't about government getting off our backs because they have been off in the first place.

It's very different this time. There is nothing wrong with promoting healthy living and eating. This is trying to force people to eat healthy. Look what SF did with the McDonald's toys? They interferred with a private business's choice of advertising it's product. Now they are attacking sugar which will affect the way people who produce products with sugar do business.
It's picking winners and losers when that should be left up to the free market.

This is the comment that stood out to me and is the failure of the positions of folks like you. Of course we are all connected. Like or not, what I do has an impact on others and what others do has an impact on me. Whether we have responsibility for society or not is debatable, but we do not live in a vacuum. Society and the individual exist together.

You're right. If you take my fries, I'm going to impact your nose with my fist.:2wave:

Anything to get him out of NJ is OK with me.

LOL He's not going anywhere. I thought everyone loved him there. Well maybe not teachers and other unions.
I know other governors are taking notice and may follow his lead.
