Smokers Beware! Proposed New York City Smoking Ban Targets Outdoor Facilities

I don't see why this is such an issue. As it stands, im not allowed to smoke a paperless joint or drink a beer in Time Square. What makes smoking a cigarette so special?

Because you should be allowed to smoke a paperless joint or drink a beer in Time Square; that's the direction you should be pushing. Not more and more intrusive government and more laws against us. At some point we have to understand what it means to live in a free society. And if we wish to keep it a free society, we're going to have to deal with the repercussions and responsibilities that come with it. This nanny state crap has got to go.

Why shouldn't you be able to smoke a j and drink a beer?

ding ding ding ding! We have a winner! People are trying to excuse tyranny with tyranny. But just because unjust laws, stupid laws, or intrusive laws exist does not give credence to enacting more unjust, stupid, or intrusive laws. We need to get rid of laws, not create more.

Why shouldn't you be able to some a j and drink a beer?

Never said i shouldn't, only that i am not allowed. One of my favorite moments this year was when my hometown in Northwest Indiana began carding everyone who purchases alcohol. That's right, even the 58 year old man with gray hair was carded. So while he was pissed, i thought it was great. Now, all voters in that area who purchase alcohol get to feel the same age discrimination i do.

Eventually, voters will have enough and vote in people who actually represent their views/ideals/values. It sucks that others have to face the burden, but i guess this is how democracy works. Take the good with the bad right?

I have that same problem. These gals that bathe in perfume make me suffocate and my eyeballs pop out.

So I just find somewhere else to be. Problem solved.

Wait wait wait... you mean you're actually able to physically move yourself from a location wherein someone's presence is odorously offensive? All by yourself? Without calling the government to come and ban the person's presence? How do you manage that? Do you have special abilities that allow you to actually think and move for yourself? You're one of those Hero dudes, aren't you?

I don't believe voters will do smart things.
Just doesn't work like that.

5 wrongs don't make a right, even if decided democratically.

Stuff like this is moronic and irrational.

Not allowed does not = not able. To be honest, i wouldn't want to smoke a j or drink a beer in Times Square. Reason be, i have respect for people. I do not smoke weed or drink in front of people because i have no idea how they feel about it. If i had a child, and someone was someking a cigarette in their presence (much less a joint), i'd tell them to get lost.

Again, its about respect. If only people had more respect for one another.

Indeed. If only people respected the fact that they don't have the right not to be offended by my presence. If you're in my presence and you're offended by anything I'm doing, guess what? GTFO of my presence. You have no right to ask me to accomodate YOUR self-imposed offenses.

Well, i could just take the ciggy out of your mouth and crush it....

If that's the case, I want a ban on fat people in revealing clothing, loud music, unleashed dogs, food, unsupervised children, etc.

The list is very long of **** that I want banned in the park.
"If I want to be a fat, fat fatty and shovel French Fries all day long, that is my choice. But oh oh, not so fast anymore. Because now we have the new fact, whether you like it or not, we have government health care now. … You know those fat people sitting on their couches? And I mean really fat. I don’t mean not like me. I mean the people who’s skin grows into the couch. … I say let them die. I say punish the person who’s been bringing them the milk shakes that allowed them to eat and not get up off the couch. Am I too harsh?" - Glenn Beck

That's fine too. I would by no means force you to smoke or drink in Times Square.

Fair enough. It's a very good thing to be respectful of the people around you. I endorse the behavior. However, being respectful cannot and should not be enforced through government force. It's not illegal for one to be disrespectful, nor should it ever be. It's a great choice to choose to be respectful; but not everyone is going to make that choice. And just because people don't make that choice does not mean we can all of a sudden use government force to enforce "respectfulness".

If i had a child, and someone was someking a cigarette in their presence (much less a joint), i'd tell them to get lost.

And you'd be more than free to do so.

If only indeed. If only, then we'd live in a much more cordial world. If if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. Fact is, not everyone will be respectful, but there's no law against being a jerk. You cannot force people to be respectful and if we live in a free society you'll have to understand that in reality not everyone will choose to be respectful. That's just a consequence of the system. Either make it not a free society or deal with it; those are the realistic "solutions". What do you want? Free and rude or Enslaved and cordial? I'll take the former.

What does Beck have to do with this?

Oh how i agree. I am more than capable of enforcing respectfulness;)

And you'd be more than free to do so.

Yep!

That's fine, so long as you don't mind being pistol whipped.

With all due respect, in 99.999 % of cases, i would not be the one who got pistol whipped. But alas, you now have developed the need for government intervention.

Indeed. If some dude ever grabbed a cig out of my mouth and crushed it, he'd find his balls in my fist. Or my knee smashing them. Depends on my mood.

That may not turn out the way you envision. BTW, I think it is well more respectful to acknowledge the base rights and freedoms of the individual even if they are doing things you do not like than it is to get on your high horse and enforce your opinions and behaviors on others.

Or you could be responsible for yourself and walk the **** away from whatever it is that's bothering you.

If i asked you nicely to not smoke around me, and you told me to get the **** out, or lit it up in spite, how is my following action (taking your smoke out of your mouth) any less respectful?

That all depends on where I hide your body. Hahah, but you have no right to snatch someone's property and destroy it. So don't pretend like the pistol whipping is the first move of violence. Your property grab is far more disrespectful and is the initiator of violence.

Perhaps. But i am more than willing and able to take such a risk. Does your right to smoke in public negate my right to be smoke free in public?
