TRENDING: At rally, Beck positions himself as new leader for Christian conservatives

Re: Beck reinventing himself

My boyfriend in high school was Catholic, which caused a high level of drama with my extremely fundamentalist parents and grandparents. So, I one-upped that by marrying a Mormon. ;)

been disinherited yet? I know one gal whose missouri baptist family was just getting used to her being a lesbian, but when she gave that up, became a mormon, got married, etc. her parents disowned her...

Re: Beck reinventing himself

a bunch of blathering baptist bigots say it, so it must be true...:2razz:

How did you know I was a baptist?

No, but it was a near thing. Of course, being a mormon is much worse than being a lesbian.

Re: TRENDING: At rally, Beck positions himself as new leader for Christian conservati

I consider Mormons Christians

I don't. There are some stark theological differences between mainstream Christianity and Mormonism that I consider to be incompatible.

Re: TRENDING: At rally, Beck positions himself as new leader for Christian conservati

which black robe regiment? Revolutionary war, or the modern one that Glenn Beck is on about?
Mormonism didn't exist during the war, started in the early 1800's....
I doubt many Mormon leaders will join Beck for anything, except maybe his excommunication for bearing false witness...

The New Black Robe Regiment.

I was raised baptist in east texas....left TX in 64, except for a few very brief visits, haven't been back since...me and the parents did NOT get along very well, but neither did the other kids...

Long term, it isn't up to you....right?

That would be true, all I can do is live by what I think is true.

Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission was on NPR today and said he believes Mormonism to be, at best, a fourth Abrahamaic religion as opposed to being Christian theology.

You can listen to it here (if you'd like): Glenn Beck And Obama's Christianity : NPR

It isn't Land's decision to make. He is entitled to his opinion, as am I. IMO, if you follow the teachings of Christ, you are proclaiming by your actions to be a christian. If you are not following the teachings of Christ, you can proclaim all you want, you are only a hypocrite.
I was raised by baptists in east texas, and I can assure you that a lot of the baptists I lived among were not christians. Many were racists, for starters. Jews and Catholics weren't liked very well, either.
The SBC waited til 1995 to apologize for their long standing advocacy of slavery.
That makes for a bit of irony, that the Southern Baptists would criticize mormons for denying the priesthood to blacks, which was changed in 1978, while they continued to believe that slavery was ok in the eyes of god for another 17 years..

Re: Beck reinventing himself

I'm hearing many moving stories on the radio from those who were there. This was not and wasn't meant to be a Rahh Rahh, get out the vote rally. It was not a Tea Party rally.
The people who were there and are able to have their voices heard were moved by the whole thing. If people were bored, I'm sure MSNBC, NBC or CNN will find those people and make sure they get air time.

From where are you hearing these moving stories? Was it from MSNBC, NBC or CNN radio? How were these people moved? Weren't they already religious before they arrived?

No, it wasn't a Tea Party rally and it wasn't advertised as so. It was advertised as recognizing the troops, not a religious revival meeting from a man who claimed to have a vision. There are elements of religious belief in some members of the Tea Party, but definitely not all. I only know what I saw. Admittedly it was hot and not a great day to listen to speeches, particuliarly rambling ones and that may have effected the reaction. But I heard most of the speech and I did not find it all that simulating.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

Rupert Murdock must be wetting himself with excitement over this one.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

mormons aren't christian?

Of course they are christians but when they go to heaven they go to a far superior heaven than all the other inferior christian religions.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

Sorry, I took this as you wouldn't want to see Christian Conservatives united, and as something that should be defeated.

I don't give a hoot if Christian Conservatives unite. They can form up like Voltron and go stomping around like Godzilla for all I care.

That's why I said "any effort on his part to organize and guide Christian conservatives."

My problem's with the circus clown, not with the clergy.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

I was cornered once by an Evangelical who wanted to inform me that us Catholics just 'made up' a lot of stuff like Limbo and Purgatory. "None of that is in the Bible", he says, and the Catholics just made it all up. The conversation came to an abrupt end when I pointed out that Christmas and Easter weren't specifically mentioned in the Bible and his wedding band was a pagan tradition.

I left the Church eons ago, but it continued to bother me that I didn't have a suitable retort (or the will to research one) for that nonsense.

Thanks much. I love to put it in someone else's face when they're spanking on someone needlessly, even if I disagree with that someone.

A boy in my daughter's class was pestering her repeatedly about accepting Jesus as her personal savior and being born again. I told her to tell him that she was born okay the first time.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

I swear, most religious disagreements are the sort that can be reduced to:

"My dad can beat up your dad!"

"Oh yeah? Well MY dad can strike YOUR dad down with a lightning bolt!"

"MY dad can kill YOUR dad's firstborn! That's YOU!"

"MY dad can strap YOUR dad to a rock and make a bird eat out his guts out EVERY DAY for all time!"

Re: Beck reinventing himself

Yes, there goes CNN. Don't they ever research anything? You can't believe anything they say. He's not a conservative either. What idiots.

And yet so many people listen to him and hang on his every word. That's the scary part.

Re: Beck reinventing himself

The way I hear it, LDS continue their work in Heaven. There is no rest, not while there are billions more to convert in the afterlife that hadn't been converted in their first life.

They are unwilling, or unable, to think for themselves, so they NEED a messiah to tell them what to do to be saved from the evil satanic Democrats...:2razz:

Re: TRENDING: At rally, Beck positions himself as new leader for Christian conservati

The thread is about Glenn Beck, why are you changing the subject?

Sometimes you just need a strawman.

Don't even get us started on what the women have to do eternally.
