Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as gay

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

And many gays figure there are more important issues. Pigeonholing people's politics based on whatever label you want to call them leads to many mistakes. Believe it or not, gays are just regular people, with the same complexities of belief that every one has.

What could be more important than equal representation under the law?

Well, I guess that depends on individuals priorities doesn't it?

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

Interesting, good to know. I wonder if it had anything to do with the McCain women...did they ever make it known their views on gay rights before they did the no h8 thing?

I doubt that had much to do with it - 22-24% of gays voted for Bush.

What could be more important than equal representation under the law?

You make it sound like they're choosing a party that is trying to deny them equal rights over a party that is trying to give them equal rights. In reality, they're choosing a party that tends not to support gay marriage over a party that also tends not to support gay marriage, but to a slightly lesser degree. Democrats have long held themselves out as the party of the gays, but I've yet to see them do much of anything to earn it.

Reminder: Dick Cheney is more supportive of gay rights than Barack Obama.

I'm sorry but wasn't Bush 43 pushing the FMA back in 2000? Why don't we look at Republican platforms from back then.......

Re: Ken Mehlman reveals he's gay

The only one who said anything about "tents" was you.

True, but the insinuation made he was merely coming out of the closet and it had nothing to do with being republican. My assertion was he was probably afraid to previously because of the "small tent" the the republicans have, as they historically have not and still aren't as supportive of gays as the left is. Hence the term "small tent." You asked why the hate? What hate?

Verstehen?

What does that have to do with the fact that there are very few differences between the dems and reps on the issue of gay rights as a whole?

Mehlman's said that he only recently came to this realization, so I don't think that's the issue.

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

This is another lies about Republicons. MY president George Walker Bush would never work with a gay.

Sean Hannity, Sith Lord...

This is true, he also doesn't have to worry about votes anymore.

All I am saying is Republicans are very good at getting people to rally around a cause no matter how good or bad it may be, so why not get them to rally around the cause of gay marriage, "don't ask don't tell" and then we have what essentially are 2 "non-issues" out of the way compared to things that truly effect every American including the economy, war on terror, taxes, etc?

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

Several gay people I know steer away from the Republican party because of their stance on gay marriage and other such issues. If Republicans just embraced them and did everything they could to make them a full part of the party rather than some side group, that would probably solve a lot of perception and image issues the Republican party has.

Just out of curiosity...what is Bill Clintons stance on gay marriage? What is Barrack Obamas stated position on gay marriage?

Damn piece of **** homophobic democrats...

As I said in an earlier post, it seems that anyone that becomes president gets default answers on certain issues because they don't want to be seen as to liberal. Unless Obama changes his mind here shortly, I guarantee you when he is out of office his stance on the issue of gay marriage will change.

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

This kind of stupid is priceless :lamo

Anyways, good on him. I can't imagine how hard it must be to live a lie.

That's exactly what I was thinking. What a relief this must be.

Except of course Bill Clinton DIDNT...and he signed the DOMA...

What equal protection under the law are democrats trying to give that republicans are not? I want specifics.

Well the republicans were pushing the FMA.

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

Not surprised, I tend to assume everyone who is anti-gay is in fact gay. So far, time and time again, I'm proven correct.

Just waiting on the outing of a member of the Phelps family.

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

Well the republicans were pushing the FMA.

And Bill Clinton signed the DOMA. That still doesn't tell me what Democrats are doing for gay rights and protections; just the standard "B-b-b-but republicans are bad" mantra.

Can you answer the question I posed? Just in case, let me repeat it again: What equal protection under the law are democrats trying to give that Republicans are not?

Clinton said that was a mistake. And I did answer the question. BTW DOMA was also a republican idea.

By the way...you didn't answer the question. What are DEMOCRATS DOING FOR gay rights that republicans aren't?

Regardless of whether he thinks it was a mistake or republicans backed it, BILL CLINTON signed it into law. The democrats own it.

They are not proactively pushing for things like the FMA.

So then your answer is that they aren't doing anything.

Just like I thought.

Re: Bush-Cheney campaign manager, ex-chairman of Republican Party set to come out as

Jallman...democrats started the process to repeal DOMA, with the DOD portion finishing up at the end of this year.

Re: Ken Mehlman reveals he's gay

Or, maybe, you can take him at his word:

Of course, as I've always said - the most virulently anti-gay people are fighting against that which they hate in themselves.

Ted Haggard? Now Ken Mehlman.

They were both at the forefront of the 2004 and 2006 anti-gay marriage initiatives used to drive religious conservatives to the polls.

Both of them gay. Huh.

This is true. But for the most part, Democrats aren't the ones trying to amend state Constitutions to ban gay marriage.

Funny thing is, if Republicans would just get over the whole gay thing, they'd probably attract a lot of gay voters due to their fiscal beliefs. But as long as they're in bed with the religious right, you aren't going to win over very many gays.

I am going to say this again: being anti-gay marriage does not make you anti-gay...

I am about as strongly pro SSM as a person can be, but even I recognize you can be against SSM without being anti-gay. It's that type of rhetoric that ultimately is more harmfull than helpful.
