Well, Praise God! :rofl The 19th child of the famous Duggar family is comin' home.

Anyone watch the show?

Duggar Baby Discharged From Hospital

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 19th child, daughter Josie, is finally on her way home after spending almost four months in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Josie, who was born last December approximately three months premature, left Arkansas Children's Hospital with her parents on Tuesday, says People.com.

"We're grateful for the prayers of thousands," Jim Bob told the site.

"We are so happy," Michelle added. "We are so excited, we are running on adrenaline. I have been getting into the routine of every three hours feeding, diapering and taking her temperature. We are so encouraged that she is doing so well."

Humor aside. Why does this matter?

I personally have no problem with them having as many kids as they want. What I wonder at is the media and the public's obsession with this exhibitionist family. Other than that, I wish them well.

That's the point.

They are a cultural phenomenon, for some reason. I can't figure out the reason people watch these reality type shows... :doh

I don't know. I could understand curiosity. I have three kids and that is a handful. Nineteen would be unimaginable.

Nope, I find the show to be ranked up there with any other reality TV show. I don't care that they've had enough kids to field their own army or the f'd up reasons why they think they should keep having kids. Just another set of f'd up people, and in this country that ain't unique.

The Duggar's do seem to be gifted at organizing and running a family. Their children look well cared for and probably have a lot of fun growing up in that family.

Good for them. They need those skills.

That's wonderful. I think we need more families like this in America. The kids are well-behaved, the parents are very kind and patient with the kids and they spend time together. This is considered freakish to some people because they're used to dysfunctional being normal.

No, I'm used to humans acting more like humans and less like rabbits.

Just because it's not popular to have a large family anymore doesn't mean there's something inhuman about it.

I'm not saying they can't do it. I'm saying it's f'd up to have that many kids and humans don't need to do that (in fact, we're not designed to), especially given the current environment that we enjoy.

That's a good point. I believe they are fully self-supporting.

They certainly seem to be a lightening rod for many people. I daresay, the pro-choice faction seems to be the most disturbed by the choice of this family in deciding to let nature take it's course in planning their family size. :2razz:

How are we not designed to?

I don't think it's wrong to have that many kids if you're able to take care of them. We need more people like them in this world.

I wonder what the bill for the Neonatal ICU was and who paid it?

They have money. I can't imagine them finding it ethical or moral to get government money.

They pay for health insurance, which means that all insured members get to pitch in to pay for astronomical medical bills for a few.

So, healthy, low risk taking people get to pay the bills for the risk takers, whether they smoke, overeat, or have 18 kids.

Health insurance premiums are, in fact, a form of socialized medicine. It's managed by the insurance company for a profit, but a similar concept.

That's the way insurance works. It's not a government-run program where tax payers are forced to pay for people who can't afford it. I'm sure they pay out the wazoo for insurance and one emergency out of 20 people that they're paying for can't be draining anyone else's pocket.

All extremely high medical bills raise the premiums for everyone. I, personally, oppose medical intervention for very low birth weight babies. I believe there should be a cutoff at some point. As technology has advanced, I think these hard choices become financially and ethically necessary.

Could it be because their own lives suck?

Do you oppose medical intervention for anyone else?

How are we not designed to?

The fact that she had 19 kids is medical technology. First off, child birth is a rather dangerous procedure. Before modern science and technology, women died quite often while giving birth. Also, we're designed to have 1 kid at a time. While there are natural variants which can produce twins, typically it is a single child. Third, as the age of the person increases, most notably the mother but there are also aging affects with the father, the chances of various birth defects rises significantly. Human beings were not designed to have litters nor do we need to continually reproduce. Prey species have litters and constantly reproduce.

I don't think it's wrong to have that many kids if you're able to take care of them. We need more people like them in this world.

I don't think we need more people like that. We don't need a population explosion. Our population is at replacement, and we have growth when we include immigration. That's enough. I don't see how having more of these people are beneficial in the least.

Are you kidding? I bet they get all sorts of money. First off, they have zero federal tax liability because every child you have, you can claim a deduction without reduction in that number till you hit zero. Don't think that this doesn't come back on society at all. As I said, I'm not going to say they can't. I just don't see what the big hoopla is about an f'd up family that can't figure out that it's no longer the 1700's.

I saw one episode of their show. The mother said that having too many kids is like saying there's too many flowers.
